The author has done a great job of collecting the many ancient stories of the third-fourth century Christian bishop of Myra (now Turkey). He was truly one who set the example of giving gifts to others. Bishop Nicholas was elected bishop of his community at an early age and served honorably. While we do not now have any known personal writings of his, we do have numerous historical details of him and his work for the kingdom of God. Bennett places the story of the bishop in the accurate historical context of the culture and the Christian church. Of course there are no red-nosed reindeer, sleigh in the sky, or people entering and exiting chimneys bearing gifts. This is a great resource for learning about the origin of the icon of the Christmas season, which has now been taken captive by non-Christian and secular images, that are not so much wrong as incomplete. This is a delightful book to enjoy.

Have you ever wondered if there is more behind the story of Saint Nicholas/ Santa Claus ? I have , so I was very interested when my mom spotted this book at the Library . I would recommend this book to everyone , in fact my Grandmother is reading it , and having much enjoyment as I have had . This book explains the whole story of a giving, loving, and caring bishop in 128 pages , which to me is unbelievable . I think that if you read this book it will show you the true tale which can bring you, and the rest of your family much joy during the christmas season or any season . I don't want to give all the facts away so I encourage you to read this book as I have .

First of all, I must admit being a big fan of William Bennett. Years ago I first read his "Book of Virtues," and then later on his, "The Moral Compass." The first of these was a stalwart companion as I raised two sons from 1973-1998. I learned a great deal about the role of parents in the many pages of his books. I also gleaned an inner sense the author's own personal devotion. I hold the works of William Bennett next to the works of C.S. Lewis (ie. The Great Divorce and others). Now on to Saint Nicholas. I have always had a fascination about the man who came to be known as Santa Claus in the 20th century. Reading "The True Saint Nicholas" was like reading a good account of Joan of Arc, or Saint Francis of Assisi. This man, Nicholas, was a real person with a good and generous heart. I loved his story. I also loved to read about all the legends that grew about and around this man. This book is a good story of history and traditions through centuries. It is a very good read. I will re-read it every Advent Season. I gave this book as a gift to our eldest son and his wife to have as a read for themselves and our young grandson. By the way, you do not have to be a person of faith to enjoy this book. Nicholas is a person of history...a good man who did good works. His example is still with us today in the 21st century. This book is a keeper!

This selection provides the reader with enough information to make one rethink the whole American Santa Claus myth. An excellent read, the book will leave one with the desire to delve more deeply into this beloved saint's life.

I've enjoyed several of Mr. Bennett's works and this one didn't disappoint either. It is interesting how this "Bringer of Gifts" has evolved over these many years and how he represents the wonderment and joy of the season. While I do agree that HE gets lost in all the material pursuits of too many of us during this time of year, the author does a good job of showing us what his life was all about, which points us straightaway to the ONE Saint Nicholas obviously patterned his life after. This short story is good reading for anyone who wants to reconnect with the true spirit of the season.
