Overview

The Truth about Twinkie Pie by Kat Yeh

There's something about asking for Impossible Things. For one little second, they feel Possible.

Take two sisters making it on their own: brainy twelve-year-old GiGi and junior-high-dropout-turned-hairstylist DiDi. Add a million dollars in prize money from a national cooking contest and a move from the trailer parks of South Carolina to the North Shore of Long Island. Mix in a fancy new school, new friends and enemies, a first crush, and a generous sprinkling of family secrets.

That's the recipe for The Truth About Twinkie Pie, a voice-driven middle-grade debut about the true meaning of family and friendship.

If you haven't yet read this book, you have commited a terrible crime. I'm serious. This book brings you to tears. It is a touching story of a girl named Gigi who discovers that The Truth is very important, and not everyone Tells It Like It Is.

Twelve-year-old Gigi quickly won my admiration with her determination to define herself in her own way and take control of her life. She kept me smiling, even as my heart ached for her. This is a tender story that inspires appreciation for the value of family and friendships. Kat Yey does a wonderful job of telling it from Gigi’s point of view while also creating empathy with supporting characters. The pace is crisp with surprises at every turn, escalating to the biggest surprise of all in the climax. I thoroughly enjoyed THE TRUTH ABOUT TWINKIE PIE and highly recommend it! Oh, and for those who have a sweet tooth, the book is peppered with sinfully sweet recipes.

This review was originally posted on my blog Belletristic Books. It’s been a while since I’ve read a middle grade story. The Truth About Twinkie Pie very much exceeded my expectations. This book has a lot to do with baking, family, friendships, telling the truth, and finding out who you are. I thought it covered all these topics quite masterfully. I believe that it’d be a great story for kids in middle school as well as teens and even older readers interested in either young adult or middle grade tales. It’s a charming book that covers some big issues in a light way while being incredibly unique. My absolute favorite part of it was the recipes contained between many of the chapters! I honestly don’t want to say a lot about this because I wouldn’t want to spoil some of the twists in it!   I quite enjoyed reading The Truth About Twinkie Pie – I felt that each character was distinct and realistic. A line from this book really spoke to me because it’s just so true about how life is – “Life had handed us one heck of a Basket of Mystery Ingredients, and we were just going to have to figure out what we wanted to do with them. Keep some things, change others, and the recipe-well, we’d just make it up as we went along, and whatever we ended up with, the most important thing was, we would make it together” (Page 326). Because of how intriguing the plot of this book is as well as how endearing the characters are, I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. Despite the fact that this book is geared towards middle schoolers, I genuinely feel that it’s the kind of story that anyone could relate to since it has a lot of aspects about being true to yourself.

This story was great. The end was unbeleiveabe. Don't worry I won't tell you! If you don't like plot twists, don't read it.

The Truth about Twinkie Pie is a book that has a lot of unexpected turns, a girl named GiGi leans to always tell the truth and "Say it as it is." GiGi makes a friend and learns the truth about her family, while there are arguments and problems she has to face, things turn out pretty well for GiGi.
