This book is essentially the published version of a famous lecture given by C.P. Snow in the 1950s about what he saw as the increasing distance between the humanities and the sciences in contemporary science and the modern university. Sometimes polemic and frequently dated, the lecture nonetheless represents a prescient and seminal statement about some of the dangers of specialization and makes the case for (gasp) a real education.
