Overview

“One fateful decision. Two unexpected endings. A perfect summer read!” —Wendy Walker, bestselling author of The Night Before

Lila Bennett’s bad choices have finally caught up with her. And one of those decisions has split her life in two. Literally.

In one life, she’s taken hostage by someone who appears to be a stranger but knows too much. As she’s trapped in a concrete cell, her kidnapper forces her to face what she’s done or be killed. In an alternate life, she eludes her captor but is hunted by someone who is dismantling her happiness, exposing one secret at a time.

Lila’s decorated career as a criminal defense attorney, her marriage, and her life are on the line. She must make a list of those she’s wronged—both in and out of the courtroom—to determine who is out to get her before it’s too late. But even if she can pinpoint her assailant, will she survive? And if she does, which parts of her life are worth saving, and which parts must die? Because one thing’s for certain—life as Lila Bennett knew it is over.

The old story of a truly unlikable human being (often a lawyer, as here) and how a single choice can change your life taken to another level with a delightful twist. It seems that Lila Bennett has made one bad choice too many and now her life is split in two, literally. Lila thinks she is finally making a good choice, the right choice. But is it really? And if it is, is it too late? Has she been as clever and successful about keeping her secrets as she thinks she has? Suddenly there is Free Lila and Captured Lila. This was a fascinating read that kept me turning pages as fast as I could. I couldn’t begin to imagine what was really happening to Lila – was she in a coma, a fugue state, the victim of an elaborate hoax? Was she aware, even in her subconscious, of her free and captured states? I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil the story for the next reader. Lila is truly despicable. While you root for her as a human being, you also want to make her pay for the selfish, deceitful, uncaring way she seems to have lived her entire life. The chapters switch back and forth from “Free” to “Captured” in such a smooth way that you become totally engrossed in each. Even though you’ll be scratching your head trying to figure out what is going on, and the ending will likely surprise you, everything seems totally believable. A great book that I heartily recommend, as I do everything else that authors Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke have written. Thanks to Goodreads for providing a copy in exchange for my honest review.

I received a net galley of The Two Lila Bennetts by Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke, in exchange for an honest review. Lila Bennet is a high powered attorney who is scrupulous and does not make the best decisions. When she is kidnapped, she is forced to face down her demons. The book shows two sides to her story and it is up to the reader to decide which is true or false. I enjoyed the book and found it an intriguing read.

I had a mini-vacation planned during the time that I was reading this book, and I just have to say that it was very hard not to continue to read, even surrounded by family. This book is that good! Lila Bennett is an attorney for a prestigious law firm and is working hard to make a name for herself. But the reputation that she is getting may not be the one that she ultimately wants to have, as she finds herself kidnapped and apologizing for all of her wrong actions. This book is absolutely mesmerizing in the way that it goes back and forth from Lila in her free state and when she is captured. She is busily engaged in trying to figure out who has kidnapped her in every other chapter; in the other chapters, she is trying to straighten out her selfish life. This book teaches life lessons to all of us and makes us imagine what would happen if we were captured and forced to atone for all of our wrongdoing. Thought provoking doesn’t even begin to cover it! What a wonderful book for all readers, especially those drawn to women’s fiction with a twist. Disclaimer Disclosure of Material Connection: I purchased a copy of this book from Amazon. The opinions expressed are my own.

This book ended up only being okay for me. It was well written and had a really unique format but I couldn’t connect with Lila and that made it less enjoyable for me. The story is told in alternating chapters between parallel universes and I thought that idea and format was cool. The idea is that one action has far reaching consequences and this book offers a look at both paths. While I loved that idea I just really wish the main character had been more likable.

Lila Bennett, an extremely ambitious and successful criminal defense attorney with a high-powered firm, seems to have everything. Her career seems to be skyrocketing, and her case win rate is virtually unequalled. She has a loving, devoted husband, and she enjoys a luxurious lifestyle. BUT she has been somewhat ruthless, has committed serious misdeeds and has made significant mistakes in her past. One night, as she leaves work and her boss asks her out for a drink, her life suddenly splits in two — or, at least at this point in the novel, chapters begin to alternate between two different courses her life could take. In one, she is kidnapped and held captive by someone who seems hell bent on destroying her life as she knows it. In the other, although she is free and has never been held captive, someone begins revealing her past misdeeds and mistakes, thus forcing Lila to deal with all that comes with these revelations and to come to terms with her past behavior. The authors, Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, have done an excellent job in keeping this a real page-turner as the reader toggles between Lila Bennett’s two lives. Not a heavy psychological thriller, but definitely one that is a tantalizing read with plenty of drama and suspense. Although this is the first book of Fenton and Steinke’s that I have read, I highly recommend it and look forward to reading their others.

It’s my favorite of all their books so far. Hands down. I started reading it months ago, and ended up walking away from it when I got to the halfway point. Not because I wasn’t enjoying it, but because I didn’t want it to end. (Yes, I really am that person who stops reading a book when they don’t want it to end. #sorrynotsorry) And when I picked it back up, my worst nightmare came true: I binged the last half in just a couple hours and then the book was done and I was devastated. There’s no way to win in this situation, people! I absolutely loved this “Sliding Doors” concept. I was constantly trying to decide which reality was the real one. I mean, maybe it should be an easy decision when choosing between a captive situation vs a free one, but it wasn’t. This story, and the moral questions it raised, had me on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE time.

In a way, this book reminded me of the choose your own adventure books that I was hooked on as a kid. You would make a choice and from that point on the story would change and go a different way. In this book, Lila has made the mistake of having an affair with her boss and by being conniving in her career. In one choice, she is captured and in the other she is free. As she goes down each path, she is changed. I really liked this book a lot and loved the way it drew out from each point. Thanks for the ARC, Net Galley.

When I finished this book, my first thoughts were "What? Wow! Just wow! What did I just read?" And that ending! I'm still trying to process it. This is definitely a tale that gave me a book hangover and I can't wait to read it again. The amazing writing duo, Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke have created another fabulous page-turning story that will keep you on edge of your seat. And it will have you scratching your head at the ending as you try to process their entire brilliant creation. This is a book that I can't quit thinking about. It needs to go on your TBR list right now! What an awesome story Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke. Thanks for the amazing ride—I look forward to taking this trip again.

The Two Lila Bennetts was unlike anything I've read before, and I totally loved it. Lila has made a series of bad choices in her life. As we get into the book, she makes a decision and that decision literally splits the book into two. Told in alternating chapters of "captured" and "free," we see how Lila deals with the choices she's made in her life and the consequences she now has to deal with. It was one of those reads where I felt like I simultaneously judged Lil and sympathized with her. Because I really think that while she made those decisions, she didn't truly think about the longterm affect they could have on her life and others. And maybe she thought she had considered them more closely, but from an outside standpoint it's easy to see that she didn't. And I realize this review is fairly short, but I don't want to give too much away, because there's a lot that happens and this is one of those books I feel like it's best to read without having a ton of details. I will say, I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down and I needed to know what happened. And it was interesting to see how the two Lilas converged and how it all concluded. If you love thriller/mystery reads, definitely check out The Two Lila Bennetts!

Thank you so much to Lake Union Publishing for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I love how this book was told from two different perspectives, the "captured Lila" and the "free Lila". It gave a lot more depth to the story and showed you how one decision can change so many different things. In one scenario the past comes back to haunt Lila and affects not only her life but her marriage and in the other scenario Lila is kidnapped and held captive as revenge. I have never read a book like this before and it was so fascinating and interesting to me. I loved this book from two of the most amazing authors!

What if for every choice two realities happen. You decide to marry Tom, or you decide to marry Harry. The split then occurs with a separate reality for each choice. Taking from the multiverse theory proposed by Hugh Everett, Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke have created a stylish and clever novel. Lila has made bad choices. She has let ambition drown her better self. She has indulged her need for gratification at the expense of her husband. She has begun to distance herself from her best friend. Unsettled she does make a choice. To end an affair. With this decision the parallel universe opens. In one she is kidnapped, terrorized and trapped. In another life seems to go on as before, or does it? Gripping, and fast paced, this reader found it difficult to put down. Look for a great summer read. Highly recommended.

THE TWO LILA BENNETT’S by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke I’ve enjoyed books by these two authors before but this one is nothing like those. This book was a huge WOW with lots of in between WOWS. I never expected this story. It is so well done that you won’t know what hit you. This was such a good book. From the very beginning to the explosive ending. Though I did figure out who was the bad person I still was surprised to actually read it. How could he... Lila Bennett has it all. She’s a powerful attorney with a powerful law firm. She’s at the top of her game in all things. She’s married to the love of her life and has a best friend who can’t be beat. But was that enough? She has a mother who loves her unconditionally and always has. So why does Lila Bennett feel spit? What about her life is lacking? This book will keep you guessing until the very end. It will have you turning pages so fast you won’t know what hit you. It’s definitely one that will have you going through ups and downs. You will love to hate Lila Bennett but you will also truly love her and feel so sorry for her. What she goes through in her life will have you rooting for her yet what she does to others will make you think maybe she deserves some of it. One part made me truly catch my breathe hard. I cried, laughed, cringed, held my breath, crossed my fingers. Yes for her to make it I actually crossed my fingers. LOL This is one very well written thriller. A psychological thriller you won’t soon forget. It will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole book. Well written, great characters, just the right amount of a tearjerker and the perfect ending to both Lila Bennett’s stories. I absolutely loved this book. Thank you #NetGalley and #Lake Union Publishing for the ARC of this book. A huge 5 stars and would be more if possible. I highly, highly recommend this book.

Lila Bennett is a criminal defense attorney at a high-powered firm. She has stepped on a lot of bodies to get where she is, and made a lot of mistakes..... the biggest one being cheating on her husband with her boss, who is also the husband of her best friend. There are always paths to choose, crossroads where we can choose what path to take. The question is, when you have gone so far down the wrong road, is it possible to get back to where you started? This book was told in alternating chapters, each in a different path that Lila's life could take. At some points the paths have eerie similarities. This is reminiscent of those choose-your-own-adventure stories, only it was more choose-your-own-thriller. This story kept me captivated from beginning to end, and I think it will for you as well

Oh how I love it when Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke have a new book out. They write like they can see into each other's minds and their stories never cease to amaze me. Even though I knew who the kidnapper was I didn't know why or to what extent the reason was...and it didn't take anything away from enjoying this book. This is a wonderfully constructed, plot driven, novel. I found this story(ies?) an entertaining and thought provoking read . If you are looking for deep character development and a beautiful literary writing style, look no further. If you want a read that not only leaves you thinking about the dynamics of working women, relationships, friendships and a whole host of deeper issues, this is a must read. The story line(s) kept me enthralled right through to the end of book. The characters are so well developed I felt that I knew them personally and even though I didn't like most of them I really wanted to know what made them tick. This was the third book I've read by Fenton and Steinke and I so look forward to reading more by this wonderful writing team.

I'm going to keep this review short and sweet. Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke are a powerful duo. Check out my review for their last book, Girls' Night Out. The Two Lila Bennetts is about a powerful defense attorney named Lila Bennett. It follows parallel story lines showing how Lila's choices impact the course of her life. I thought the structure of the book was really interesting. It took me a bit to understand what was going on but once I understood the premise I was on board. I was hooked from very early on and the story kept drawing me in from chapter to chapter. I will say I was more invested in the "captured" story line than the "free" story line (you will understand this when you read the book), but as a whole package it was entertaining. I will say that I thought the ending was going to lead somewhere different, and when it didn't, I did end up feeling a little bit disappointed. I didn't feel like the story was as resolved as I would have liked. But all in all, strong work by the powerhouse author duo! -I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to review.-

I received an advanced copy for an honest review. I read a few posts about THE TWO LILA BENNETTS by Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke and was fascinated by the premise. I find myself enjoying stories where the narrative explores the consequences of the decisions a character does or doesn't make and that is definitely the case with this book. I was very excited to be approved on @netgalley to get an advanced ebook copy for review. THE TWO LILA BENNETTS begins with the title character bound and kept captive. Lila doesn’t know why she has been taken, but she knows that one doesn’t wind up held hostage without making some bad decisions. The story is told in alternating chapters, each following a different path Lila could have taken. In one, her decisions lead her to be taken, winding up bound on a cold floor trying to determine who has taken her and why. In the alternate chapters she avoids capture, but comes to realize that someone is after her with malicious intent. In both timelines she is realizing that her past decisions have come back to haunt her. In the beginning Lila isn’t a character who one necessarily likes. While she is a very successful defense lawyer, she has not arrived at this without breaching some moral and ethical standards. Some of the suspense comes from the fact that she has many people who could be angry enough to be behind this crime. The authors do an excellent job of peppering in clues and suspicions for multiple characters. In spite of Lila’s moral failings of the past, the authors do a great job of showing her development in both timelines. The fact that Lila is willing to change and grow is a redeeming factor. The supporting cast of characters around Lila are well developed, imperfect in their own ways and believable. This book kept me hooked throughout, enough so that I finished it in a single afternoon/evening staying up well past when I should have been asleep with work the next day. I will definitely be looking to pick up more from @lisaandliz and I definitely recommend that you pick up a copy of THE TWO LILA BENNETTS when it comes out July 23rd!

Definitely a 5 star read! This has everything a psychological suspense needs, to be great; drama, deceit, revenge, frightening, and you don’t have any idea who the perpetrator of this diabolical scenario is. Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke are known for strong characters and they did it again here. Most are difficult to like, as is Lila Bennett, a vicious, successful defense lawyer, who “takes no prisoners”. As her personal and professional life come to a crossroad, something needs to change in order for her to save herself. Hence she is thrust in alternative situations. In one she is the victim of a kidnapping, her kidnapper vowing to force her to make amends for everyone she has hurt. And the other, is an unknown and is intent on destroying her. Lila recognizes the terrible person she has become, as she seeks to change, but will she survive to apologize to her husband, her friends and clients. My thanks to #LakeUnionPublishing #NetGalley the the authors for the Arc in return for my personal review. I loved this intense, suspenseful novel!

4.5 stars This book drew me in from page one and kept me up way past my bedtime as I couldn't out it down .The unique story structure depicting how one small decision can change the course of your life reminded me of the Gweneth Paltrow movie Sliding Doors, but with a devious twist. While I didn't actually like Lila, Ethan or Sam as people, that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the novel or investment in the outcome of Lila's choices. At times, I actually found myself rooting against Lila in both of her paths. The authors delivered some great red herrings throughout the book and little clues along the way that become clear when you finish the novel . This is the perfect weekend or vacation read ! Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the chance to read an advanced copy of this book on exchange for my honest review.

Twisty and fun! Okay, fine - it's a strange hallmark of my personality that I find suspense "fun." But The Two Lila Bennetts doesn't get all that dark or scary (read: upsetting), so it really was a fun reading experience for me. (Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for a free e-arc of The Two Lila Bennetts for review, and thank you to Lisa and Liz for a free hard copy arc.) I'm endlessly impressed that this book was written by two authors - I don't know how Lisa and Liz come together to so seamlessly tell a story. But they do, and it really works here. Lila Bennett is a criminal defense lawyer and maybe not quite one of the "good" ones - she's made some bad choices leading up to our introduction to her, and she tells lies with impunity. Yet...and this is where their good writing comes into play...I totally rooted for this flawed, multi-faceted character from the get-go. The story splits early on into two narratives, which also was done so well. Both the length of the chapters and the amount of action felt well-managed. (I've read books like this where I only wanted to follow one of the storylines, or got annoyed by the precedence given to one of them, but that didn't happen here.) I call this book "twisty" not because there's a ton of action, but because it was less predictable than most of the thrillers I've read recently. Not knowing exactly how everything was going to play out was such a treat. Go ahead: inhale this one!

Wow, what did I just read?! My mind is reeling after finishing this book. _ I will keep this brief because I think you should go into this book blind to really appreciate it. Lila Bennett is a ruthless criminal attorney, one who defends the indefensible. She doesn’t always feel good about the cases she takes on, but selfishly she loves the wins. She starts to realize she doesn’t like the person she has become, she has made a lot of bad choices. One choice literally splits her life in two, but is it too late for redemption? The Two Lila Bennetts is not only brilliant, it really makes the reader reflect on how to be a better version of themself. The endless suspense kept me reading- what a ride! This is a must read for summer,!

This is a fast-paced story that will have you reading into the night to find out what happens. The story reminded me of A Thousand Doors by JT Ellison, in which several authors gave their version of what happened to a woman if she made different choices at pivotal moments in her life. Only, The Two Lila Bennetts goes into much more depth and gives two perspectives with each one shedding light on how this woman needs to change her life. The woman is Lila Bennett, a successful lawyer. She has gotten where she is by caring only for herself and stepping over others to have what she wants. She’s a defense attorney who will stop at nothing to win. But after a time, this lifestyle begins to weigh her down and guilt sets in. She’s left many hurt people in her past and her current behavior is still set on the same path. Readers are shown two separate scenarios as Lila Bennett is forced to come to terms with who she is and how she needs to make amends. Neither one is easy, but one of them will be fatal. I was really impressed at how the authors resolved the ending. It’s not an easy thing to merge timelines in a believable way and they did an excellent job. Many thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read an advance copy and give my honest review.
