The illustrator, Erin Stead, drew me to the book. I adore her simple, emotional, and muted illustrations. The combination of the illustrations and the text, made me fall in love with this book. Michelle Cuevas captures an expanse of emotion in a sparsely worded text. Using analogies ("sharp as a fish scales"), lyricism & alliteration ("He stank of seaweed and salt and fisherman's feet."), and ocean images ("clam-hugged pearls" and seshells), Michelle draws the reader along on a lonely man's journey to discover the recipient of an unaddressed letter in a bottle. Mix a little mystery, a little community, and a couple of extra illustrated characters and you have a beautiful picture.
