Book One in an exciting new series, the Shadow Warrior saga.

In the fog-enshrouded peaks of the island nation of Nehan, Ran, a newly-minted shadow warrior is set loose on a musha shugyo, a wandering quest, whereby he must travel alone and hone his skills. Journeying aboard a merchant vessel, Ran hears tales of a mysterious lord believed to have the dead for his servants.

Soon these tales prove all too real as Ran comes to the aid of Jysal, a beautiful sorceress, whose undeveloped power gives her the ability to heal a land -- or destroy it. But the Lord Kan-Gul also covets Jysal's power. And when Kan-Gul sends a army of the undead to take Jysal by force, Ran is faced with the ultimate warrior's choice: save himself, or face down a horde of enemies that cannot be killed for the simple reason that they are already dead!

Started out well and the main characters were good, but lost interest with the plot. The challenge the group faced just didn't have that hook.

My only beef with this story was that there wasn't more!!! I wanted to keep reading... I will have to wait for the next part of the adventure. I have been a fan of Jon F. Merz for many years. Once again he proves why I love his work so much! This book is a thrilling joyride and was hard to put down. Loved the characters and the plot is intriguing. I was happy to see that the publisher put the short story (prequel to this) on their website for all to enjoy free of charge. I really enjoyed the cover art as well!

Very enjoyable. I got started and couldn't put it down. I've been reading Jon F. Merz's Lawson Vampire series for years now and absolutely love them. When I saw that he was writing something new I wasn't sure I would like it since it was obviously very different from Lawson. I received an advanced readers copy through Netgalley and decided to try it anyway. I'm so glad I did because it was an adventure that had me biting my nails from beginning to end. The main character, Ran, is a Shadow Warrior with training kind of like a ninja. He is sent out into the world on his own to find out what kind of person and warrior he is. He finds himself, along with a different kind of warrior, a beautiful girl, and the girls warrior protector, in a land ruled by an evil sorcerer with an army of zombie like creatures. Ran has to find a way to keep his new friends and himself safe, escape the clutches of Kangul, and warn the elders of the Shadow Warriors that Kangul is gathering a huge army to march on them. A lot of action and excitement in this one with zombies, dragon like creatures, sword fighting, and sorcery. it will keep you up at night and on the edge of your seat.
