I enjoyed reading this book. It started out fairly well, and while it did read adequately for me, I did notice a slight pacing issue and a lack of character background as the novel progressed. I enjoyed the telling of this story; it mainly focusing on the age old battle between light & dark, and low key romantic vibes that can be found throughout the novel. It's an ideal read for fans of fantasy with a bit of adventure.

Great Read! The Undelightened was a great read. I loved the relationship between the Zach and Leam. The characters were so strong and it was so well written I couldn't help but get caught up in it. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading adult magic books!

"The Undelightened" is a book with an intriguing premise- magic is all around us in the Dark and the Light, while we, the "Unknowings," are under constant threat from the Dark and protected by those from the Light. Leam is a member of the Dark who has virtually become an Unk (Unknowing), after his failed "delightenment" ceremony, which removes all the light from you and when you begin to have your powers. At his half-brother's ceremony, he is singled out by the leader of the dark and begins on a dangerous set of trials- all the while running into Eloa of the Light and beginning to fall for this girl. Overall, I had mixed feelings about the book. As others have mentioned, it felt very, very slow and got bogged down in several scenes while glossing over others, that seemed important. For that reason, I kept putting it down and having to flip through the past chapters to see if the information was contained within. It made for very, very slow reading. It's a bit of Romeo and Juliet with the Dark/Light dimensions, but of course there are some key differences. I wish we had more information on the history of the Dark/Light and why they exist and how. It seemed to be left to the imagination with some small tidbits here and there. It was an interesting premise, but I felt that it fell a little short for me as it was slow and at times difficult to follow. Leam was an interesting main character, so I am curious to see how it may evolve in the future. Please note that I received a copy of this book through a goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.

Reviewed by Michelle Stanley for Readers' Favorite The Undelightened is Volume 1 from the young adult paranormal series by Bentz Deyo. After failing the magical delightened test given to prospective followers of evil, Leam Holt is given a second chance by Gideon, the pernicious leader of Darkness. Gideon has devised a dangerous weapon to control the Unknowing (humans) and suspects Leam has special powers that will be useful. When Jace, a member of Light, disappears, his daughter, Eloa, attempts to find him and becomes acquainted with Leam. Both hide their true identities from each other, but are unaware of others watching them. Leam, despised by his family, eventually grasps how important his presence and newly acquired skills are, which can assist in the war between Darkness and Light. He now faces a difficult dilemma. Mesmerizing is the word I thought of while reading Bentz Deyo’s awesome paranormal tale, The Undelightened. It had a very good beginning so I kept turning pages as I found myself immersed in the story. There is so much entertaining drama and great dialogue from carefully developed characters, some of whom were very original and imposing. The writing was so descriptive, and there were several repulsive scenes that made me feel relieved that I was not eating at the time. The Undelightened, Volume 1, is a remarkable story by Bentz Deyo. The outcome of the war between Darkness and Light continues in his other paranormal books in the series. Both young adults and older readers will enjoy this author’s novels.

I received this book through Goodreads First Reads. I enjoyed this book soooo much! When I read the synopsis for this book I was a little skeptic at first but it did not disappoint. War between light & dark, magic, secrets, family problems, even a little romance...need I say more?? Bentz Deyo took the age old battle between light & dark & gave it his own unique touch with amazing & interesting characters that I cannot get enough of. When does book two come out?? I need to know more about Leam & Eloa!!  Thank you Bentz Deyo for creating such a wonderful story & sharing it with us readers!!
