Reviewed by Kiara Done for Readers' Favorite It is one hundred years into the future and, after a second civil war and global warming have devastated the United States, a newer, better society has risen from the ashes: The Union. Everything runs seamlessly, pollution is at an all time low and everyone lives by the belief that all human lives have equal value. This is the privileged society that seventeen-year-old Evan Taylor has grown up in and, like most high school graduates, she feels overwhelmed by the challenges now facing her. She doesn't feel cut out for any of the job assignments available – heck, she doesn't even feel cut out to be a part of her own family! All she knows is that she wants to make a real difference. Well, after she’s kidnapped and taken to a place that she didn't even know existed, she might just get the chance to do that. Then again, she might also end up falling in love - or dying! Who knows what the future holds? T.H. Hernandez's transcendent look into a futuristic world in The Union was inspired! I found Hernandez’s first-person narrative in The Union to be a captivating read. The lead female character is strong – but not perfect. She’s just an ordinary teen facing regular issues. Indeed, accidents and mishaps seem to follow her around like a bad stench, but the red-haired vixen has the strength of character to challenge them fiercely. Moreover, she meets some engaging love interests and compelling characters in the process. The carefully painted futuristic world is possibly one of the book's best features, while the cliff-hanger ending leaves the reader wanting to know what’s going to happen next! Definitely give it a read if you enjoy a good coming-of-age adventure story.

T.H. Hernandez creates a rich world set over 100 years into the future, after a second civil war and damaging climate change. I was quickly drawn into the story of Evan, a high school graduate trying to figure out what to do with her life. Evan enjoys a comfortable high-tech, sustainable life in The Union - what the United States has become since the war. Everyone has roof top gardens and takes public transportation. But over the summer following high school, she discovers not everyone lives as comfortably as she does and most of what she thought she knew about history and her government is lie. Evan ends up caught between two worlds, both of which are flawed, but also ideal in their own way. I really enjoyed the pace of the book and couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what Evan was going to do. Be warned, though, this book is part of a planned series so although the main crisis is resolved, you will be left wanting to know what happens next.

Evan is a great protagonist, not perfect but finding her way. Hopefully her relationships with her new family and Cyrus will find a way back into her life. This book could use a little more editing, using the right words and grammar in many places could remove distractions from the story itself. Well worth the reading.
