Overview

The University Challenge: Higher Education Markets and Social Stratification

Researcher Pugsley (U. of Wales College of Medicine) follows the expectations and experiences of a group of students in the last cohort to whom "free higher education" applied in the UK. He found significant differences between what the market said and what it offered: students and their parents expected social equality, but found the realities of higher education reflected, if not exceeded, injustice practiced in the surrounding society. He also found that although some students were able to take advantage of higher education market offerings, those offerings were eventually found not to be available to all. He calls for a redefinition of full citizenship to alleviate social injustice, and for a re-examination of the higher education system, its offerings, and its real purpose.
