About the Author

Rojé Augustin is a native New Yorker currently living in Sydney with her husband and two daughters. This after a three-year stint in London. So she is officially an ex-pat. Her husband is Australian, which is why she's way the heck down under in the first place. She began her career as an editorial assistant at the New York Daily News, writing pieces for the lifestyle insert BET Weekend Magazine. She then moved to television, first at CBS New Productions where she cut her teeth on hour-long documentaries for cable, then to 20/20 with Barbara Walters and John Stossel, Primetime with Diane Sawyer and Good Morning America Weekend Edition as a writer and producer. She also freelanced for The Tyra Banks Show and E! She has recently begun developing television series in Sydney.

Rojé has studied in both Paris and London and she is a graduate of Columbia University. Despite spending most of her professional life in television, which Rojé loves, she always returns to writing. The Unraveling of Bebe Jones is her first novel.

I just finished the book and I really enjoyed it! It's definitely not your typical black lit. I didn't expect anything less, but I have to say the writing is amazing! I'm excited to see what's next in the series. Valerie F.

Awesome book! I bought it on a complete whim and once I started it, could not put it down. It's well-written, and the story is spun so that you empathise with the characters and want more and more of the story (I can't wait for the next book in the series!).

In her debut novel The Unraveling of Bebe Jones, author Roje Augustin weaves an intriguing tale that takes the reader into the behind the scenes world of the rich and famous. The story follows the unraveling world of R&B diva Bebe Jones. When twenty-three year old struggling writer Desiree Washington is hired by her idol, R&B superstar Bebe Jones to tutor her children, Desiree isn't prepared for the reality of the singer's world. Filled with personal dramas, secrets, dysfunctional family relationships, career crises, and heartbreak, the reality of Bebe's world unraveling and spiraling out of control is eye-opening, as we all like to believe that the rich and famous live a glamorous and privileged lifestyle. Desiree gets to see the behind the scenes life of her idol, and comes to realize that Bebe's public diva persona is a clever mask that hides the reality of a vulnerable, insecure, unhappy and lonely woman. The Unraveling of Bebe Jones is a fascinating story that takes the reader on a dramatic and emotional roller coaster ride. You can't help but get drawn into Bebe's world and feel for her as it starts to crumble, the author provides the reader with a realistic inside look into a famous person's personal life, and shatters the fantasized illusion of the glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous. While Bebe's struggling career and personal life is the main focus, I loved that the author interweaves the personal stories of Desiree and Sean into the storyline, each has their own skeleton in the closet and buried secrets that make the story even more intriguing. But alas ... the author leaves the readers wanting more with a cliffhanger ending, but rest assured, the Jones family saga will continue in the next installment in the Bebe Jones series. In The Unraveling of Bebe Jones, Author Roje Augustin uses her professional experience in the entertainment industry to weave an entertaining tale that captivates the reader's attention. She draws them in with a behind the curtain real world portrait of the lifestyle of the rich and famous, and reveals the dramatic trials and tribulations that the public never gets to see.

Desiree Washington met legendary singer Bebe Jones when Bebe came to her school to read the kids her book.  That day changed Deisree’s life.   Many years later she gets a job as nanny and tutor to Bebe’s two young children and realizes all is not as it seems.   Desiree gets a life full of crisis and meltdowns.  She falls in love with kids and tries to keep them safe and unknowing, but realizes quickly that the kids see much more than anyone thinks.   Everyone has an idol, someone you look up to and wish you could have their life or at least parts of their life.  That is how Desiree feels.   Unfortunately, what you see is usually not what you get and Desiree sees this first hand.   Expecting the glamorous life when she  is hired, she gets something totally different.   Sure there is the mansion, the nice cars, the flying around, but then there is the drugs, the tantrums, and the drama that is the true life of Bebe.  Desiree’s eyes are opened.  I always thought it would be cool to work for someone like Bebe, a start bigger than life.  After reading this book, which I do realize is not how all stars are, I change my mind.   The paparazzi is always an issue for a star, but the rest of the lifestyle is way out of control and nothing anyone should want.   It is evident from the beginning that Bebe is not happy with her life.  She puts on a great front and pretends, but just below that happy surface is a sad, neglected, and dangerous person.   Having to live a life in the media and at the whims of the public is rough, but what is worse is not having friends or support staff.  The stories have been told of stars surrounding themselves with “Yes” people and that is exactly what Bebe has managed to do.  Everyone is so afraid of making her mad that no one will step in and stop the train wreck that has become her life.  All Bebe needs is one GOOD friend to step up and tell her about life, unfortunately she does not have that person.  This was an interesting read.  It was not a romance book, it was not a biography of a star.  The Unraveling of Bebe Jones was a story that will open your eyes to the life a star can live.   I will recommend this novel to fellow book lovers.

0 stars - DNF Where I stopped reading: Page 54 (Nook) Why I stopped reading: I just could not get into this book. First, the British spellings didn’t set right with me. The story is set in the US. The characters are American. And while the story is told in the third person point of view, I do not understand why there were British spellings throughout. It didn’t fit in my opinion. There were quite a few typographical errors as well. More than any of that, the story just didn’t work for me. I didn’t like the main characters—Desiree and Bebe. I didn’t connect with them, I didn’t feel for them, I didn’t care about them. Maybe they got better as the story went on, but I wasn’t interested enough to finish this book. What others have rated this book: According to Goodreads, the average rating for The Unraveling of Bebe Jones is 3.53. It looks like a majority of readers gave this book 4 stars. There were 12 5-star reviews on Amazon. At Barnes & Noble, the majority of the reviews were 4 stars. Just because I didn’t finish this book doesn’t mean you may not. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)
