As a publisher of over 20 years, it is exciting to receive a manuscript whereby the author writes not only from his/her heart but also from their personal experiences. In The Urge Godfrey Traub’s characters have sensitivity, passion, ambition, deceitfulness, remorse and the many personalities that readers either hate and/or love in novels and in movies. The Urge is the second novel by Mr. Traub and it touches on many of the desires and fears most human beings experience either first hand or by someone very close to them, that effects them personally. The beginning of the novel is amusing as Jonny, who is 13 years old, is challenging his psychiatrist, and Jonny’s barmitzvah speech will keep you laughing throughout the entire Chapter. His mother is concerned as to whether he is a cross-dresser and is having an identity crisis. As the story evolves, the mood changes and Johnny becomes a “ladies man.” Later he becomes an attorney and falls in love with a billionairess, Kim, who is charged with murder, and Jonny is part of the legal team representing her. The outcome is a shocker. The Urge is quite different from Godfrey Traub’s first novel, North South North, which is a true story of three generations at the turn of the century in Eastern Europe in a small village in Lithuania, and the trials and tribulations they endured, as told through the eyes of the people who lived it. I highly recommend both novels and can visualize both becoming great movies some day. Godfrey Traub obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Law and practiced as an attorney in Johannesburg until 1976.
