The U.S. Civil War on the Front Lines by Tim Cooke

In 1860 and 1861, arguments about slavery-led the Southern states to leave the Union. President Abraham Lincoln went to war to preserve the Union. On both sides, soldiers lived in camps far from home. They marched miles across the country and faced tough conditions. As American fought American in bloody battles, the death toll climbed, and to date no war has claimed more American lives. What is war really like for the soldiers who fight in it? Life on the Front Lines takes you behind the scenes of some of the major conflicts of the last 150 years. It uses eyewitness accounts, revealing photographs, and detailed text to let you stand in the soldiers' shoes and experience all parts of their lives in the conflicts.
