About the Author

Sir Monier Monier-Williams, (1819-1899) was the second Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, England. He was Bombay, India, and taught Asian languages at the East India Company College from 1844 until 1858, before taking the position at Oxford vacated by H.H. Wilson. His lasting contribution to Sanskrit studies is his exhaustive "Sanskrit-English Dictionary," which was based on the earlier Petersburg Sanskrit Dictionary published in 1872. A later revised edition of Williams's Dictionary was published in 1899 with collaboration by Ernst Leumann and Carl Cappeller.

The compiler and editor of this Index is Jon W Fergus, manager and chief editor at Kshetra Books.
