The Very Best of Buster Brown

The Very Best of Buster Brown features 22 original classics by Brown, the blues harpist/singer who hit the number one R&B spot with "Fannie Mae" (number 38 pop). Brown was the archetypal R&B singer who came on the scene five years too late. When he scored his big hit, popular music was switching to sounds more accessible to a younger populace, like "The Twist." The wailing harp player sang with the same intensity. His strident tenor was similar to '60s soul man Howard Tate, but more powerful. "Madison Shuffle" is a harp lover's delight; Brown blows the mouth organ as if he's falling off a cliff yelling help -- but transforms to Mr. Happy Harp on the melodic "Lost in a Dream." The selections include "Dr. Brown," "John Henry," "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?," "Fannie Mae," a "Fannie Mae" outtake, "Fannie Mae is Back," and a super soulful rendition of the Moonglows' "Sincerely." With the exception of the Moonglows' tune and a few others, Brown wrote most of the material. Even if you don't normally buy CDs of this genre, you'll love this one. Buster Brown made everything he did essential, and influenced many '60s singers such as Wilson Pickett and Joe Stubbs. It's a shame he wasn't more successful.
