The Vexations of Art: Velázquez and Others

Now available in paperback

A major art historian reflects on a great tradition of European painting.

"The Vexations of Art is an engrossing, passionate attempt to re-engage with painting as a mode of thought at a time when 'it is not clear in what form the resource of painting—for surely painting has been a singular resource of the greater European culture—will continue."—Jackie Wullschlager, Financial Times

"[A] fascinating book that will surely generate discussion for some time to come."—Mindy Nancarrow, Renaissance Quarterly

badly damaged book received, twice in a row--I really wanted this book. first copy arrived with all of the pages i wanted missing; second copy arrived very badly dented and folded--several expensive color fold prints were wrinkled badly, and not copyable. i kept the second damaged book, but plan to complain. Why did I receive two books in such unacceptable condition? i kept the second, because wrinkled as the pages were, at least they were in order, and the missing pages were restored. in general, i am totally disillusioned with your shipping and charges--I received two damaged books in a row, and decided to keep the one that wasn't missing pages, but the book itself is so damaged, compromise, and wrinkled. I will never again order an art book from Barnes and Noble--the service is poor, the books arrive damaged, very bad experiences for me, really. I will order from Amazon in the future, unless Barnes and Noble corrects the insulting and damaging books I have received. diana shaffer
