I can't tell you how much I loved this book! The two children who explore the Victorian House are so real and so convincing that I wanted to simply accompany them in their adventures and join right in! When they actually discover who is living in the house, I thought my heart would jump right out of my chest!. These children are loveable and likable and I also thought that the adult intervention was both timely and right. Dr. Pirnot writes so well about children and she writes with such respect for their abilities and their potential for growth. Although this is a mid-grade novel, I think adults would love it as well.

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Readers' Favorite “The Victorian House” by Dr. Karen Pirnot is a story that will tug at the heart strings of readers bringing both tears and smiles. Twelve year old Silky and Sly were visiting Sly’s grandparents for the summer when they decided to explore the old Victorian house. What they found not only changed their lives but that of several other people. Pax was a nine year old child, orphaned at the age of five. He was brought to Smith Mountain, Virginia, to live with his paternal grandparents. They lived a very primitive life without electricity, running water or plumbing in the house. Pax learned how to wash clothes on a washboard, tend a garden and store the vegetables in a cellar. When his grandparents passed away Pax was left alone to care for himself. He used all that his grandparents taught him to survive. At first he hid from Sly and Silky but soon he began looking forward to their visits.   Dr. Karen Pirnot is one of my favorite children’s authors; her books always have strong juvenile characters that exhibit wisdom, strength of character and morals. In her latest book “The Victorian House,” she introduces us to three amazing young people who capture our interest and our hearts from the first page. Dr. Pirnot also introduces factual history by adding Booker T. Washington to the story. This book will make a fine addition to any child’s library shelf.
