The Virgin Suicides: Music From the Motion Picture [Emperor Norton]

Air's rich, atmospheric Virgin Suicides soundtrack does a great job at capturing the film's '70s suburban claustrophobia in an intellectual, abstract way, but this disc is the real deal: ten flashback-inducing tracks that will take you right back to the days of Gerry Ford, velour, and power-pop. Each carefully chosen song evokes the film's early-to-mid-'70s setting; you can imagine any of them turning up on a 45 found in a high school time capsule from the class of 1976. Nothing says pent-up estrogen like Heart, who are represented by the stellar singles "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You," both from their 1975 debut album Dreamboat Annie. Power-pop king Todd Rundgren contributes his sentimental hit "Hello, It's Me" and an earnest gem from his Wizard years, "A Dream Goes on Forever." Other highlights include Al Green's fine falsetto on "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" and the alien abduction epic "Come Sail Away" from the kings of cheesy art-rock, Styx. Throw in a couple of Air's movie-specific tracks and a bopping "Everything You've Done Wrong" from hip '90s Canadian band Sloan and you've got a treasure trove of guilty musical pleasures.
