Overview

Roberta Simpson Brown's stories take place in familiar country. Children ride rides at traveling shows. The clang of the locker doors is between-class music at the high school. Parents send their children off to bed with a snack of milk and cookies. There are, though, other... things... in this fictional landscape. Things that want a little snack themselves, and not of the milk-and-cookie variety, either. There are trees that walk, statues that accuse, and white-faced ticket takers with gentle names like "Dave" who send people on very long journeys. There are fish here that we certainly hope you're never on the other end of the fishing line from. Ms. Brown, an acclaimed storyteller, has put together this collection of original modern-day scary stories. They're intense, creepy, and perfect for reading aloud to a friend on a crisp fall evening, or for telling around a campfire when the sky is full of stars, or for reading by yourself in an isolated old house as the wind rises and the rain blows against the roof and a shutter bangs downstairs.... Well, maybe not.

Meet the Author

Roberta Simpson Brown Bio: Known as the "Queen of the Cold Blooded Tales," by her fellow writers, Roberta has performed her stories from coast to coast, including performances on National Public Radio, Voice of America, TV's Lifetime, "Beyond Chance" and the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Brown is the author of 10 books, and this is her fourth scary story collection from August House. Her chilling stories are set in familiar, contemporary settings like: schools, family rooms, neighborhoods, farms, and even campgrounds that create an undercurrent of something very, very scary pulling the reader into the undertow of terror. Roberta grew up on a farm near Russell Springs, Kentucky, at the edge of Appalachia and she graduated from Berea College before pursuing a career in education and becoming a writer. Roberta retired from teaching so that she could devote her time and energy to writing and storytelling. She is married to Lonnie E. Brown, who has co-authored 4 books with her. The two of them currently live in Middletown, Kentucky and enjoy ghost hunting with their friends. In their spare time, Roberta and Lonnie also perform ghost stories at schools and libraries and conduct paranormal investigations with the Louisville Ghost Hunters and The American Ghost Society.
