Overview

The Watchers Out of Time by H. P. Lovecraft, August Derleth

Venture at your own risk into a realm where the sun sinks into oblivion–and all that is unholy, unearthly, and unspeakable rises. These rare, hard-to-find collaborations of cosmic terror are back in print, including

• Wentworth’s Day A fellow figures his debt to a dead man is null and void, until he discovers just how terrifying interest rates can be.

• The Shuttered Room A sophisticated gentleman must settle his grandfather’s estate, only to find that the house shelters dark secrets.

• The Dark Brotherhood A beautiful woman and her companion meet the likes of Edgar Allan Poe, in a tale as terrifying as anything Poe himself ever created.

• Innsmouth Clay A sculptor returns from Paris to create a statue not entirely of this world–and not at all under his control.

• Witches’ Hollow A new schoolteacher puts his soul in peril while trying to save one of his students from a ravenous creature.

About the Author

Almost completely ignored by the mainstream press during his lifetime, H. P. Lovecraft has since come to be recognized as one of the greatest writers of classic horror, on a par with Edgar Allan Poe, Lovecraft's mentor. H. P. Lovecraft's work has been translated into more than a dozen languages, his tales adapted for film, television, and comic books, and he has been the subject of more scholarly study than any other writer of horror fiction save Poe.

All of the tales contained within this book are written by Lovecraft's contemporary, August Derleth. The tales no less take a quite distinct spin on the classic tales of Lovecraft, chiefly deviating on the Shadow Over Innsmouth and the Dunwhich Horror. Being that both these original tales provided much of the background and setting, I was enthralled. The namesake of the book, The Watchers Out of Time, is an unfinished work by Derleth. His death superseded the completion of the tale. **** Overall, I would not recommend the book to someone unfamiliar with Lovecraft's work, but rather after reading the more popular tales of Lovecraft to be better acquainted with the background setting of the tales. Derleth even goes a bit risque in some tales--see "Innsmouth Clay". Knowing how Lovecraft himself never delved into such material and reading the few bits of the material certainly made me laugh a bit! One can also be certain to see the Cthulhu mythos return here as well. The Dark Brotherhood sees the appearance of one of my favorite literary figures, Poe. But is it really Poe? Read the tale to find out! *** Overall, any die-hard fan of Lovecraft needs to check this book out. Though it was written by Derleth, the Lovecraftian themes resound in the book. At around 250 pages, it was a speed read for me, although I am completely enamored by anything dealing with that of Lovecraftian theme. I do recommend, at least, reading the sample.

If you've read all of the H.P. Lovecraft stories before than this book is a satisfying companion to this unique world of horror. Derleth captures the feel of Lovecraft's universe if not his particular voice and proves to be an apt pupil.
