What is best about this, and all of MacDonald's Archer books, is his use of characters to point out societal ills. His condemnation of various groups suggests a jaded viewpoint of humanity. This is one of his best.

I adore the Lew Archer series by Ross MacDonald, and this book is one of my favorites. I love Archer's dry, dry sense of humor, his excellent intelligence and the strange cases he involves himself in. MacDonald writes like a dream; he's a poet writing mystery novels and I love the end result! I've read all the Lew Archer novels and a few of my favorites include: The Chill, The Zebra-Striped Hearse, and the Underground Man. I also loved Blue City and The Dark Tunnel. I would recommend devouring all of MacDonald's books; when you run out, you may want to try the Trav McGee series by John D. MacDonald, the Philip Marlowe series by Raymond Chandler, and maybe the James Bond series by Ian Fleming.
