The Whispered Word: A Theology of Preaching by Marjorie Hewitt Suchocki

Suchocki explores the art and practice of proclamation through the lens of process thought. In a fresh interpretation of the concept of "being made present", Suchocki shows us how the encompassing whisper that is God's presence in us and around us becomes a shout in the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ — and how preaching is the extension of Christ's incarnation into our time.

In 118 pages Suchocki gives a concise, very insightful, and easily read volume on preaching from a 'process' viewpoint. Do not let the term 'process theology' or the fact that she is a Methodist minister lead you to think that the value of this book is limited to people of these persuasions. Suchocki holds a very high value of preaching yet reminds the reader that preaching is a community act and that the writing of the sermon as well as its reception by the listeners are in God's hands. Seven of Suchocki's sermons are included at the end of the book. Suchocki's tone is gentle but persuasive, her advice uplifting yet practical - among other things explaining how to handle that tough scripture verse. This book would be quite useful to a new preacher but would also be reviving to a long-time preacher who has lost her or his steam.
