Overview

The White Flyers, Harvard and Yale: American Coastwise Travel by George F. Gruner

Between World War I and II, turbine-powered steamships such as the Harvard and Yale cruised along the east and west coasts. These nearly identical sister ships, built in America, were known as the White Flyers. The first chapter describes their engines, new technology at the time, and their luxurious interiors. Subsequent chapters give the histories of the ships, their routes, the ports they visited, the sinking of the Harvard on the California coast, and the role of the Yale during World War II, including her demolition in 1949. The author is a retired journalist with a passion for maritime history. The book includes dozens of black-and-white photos of ships and reproductions of cruise brochures. Annotation c.
