Behind every secret lurks one much darker...

Thrust back into the cryptic world of Cania Christy, Anne Merchant finds herself tangled in a mystic plot she can't escape. Eerie visions haunt her. Whispers of her nefarious past vex her. But it's not until Ben Zin is forced to compete for the Big V—with a vengeful guardian to assure his failure—that she faces the reality of life in a world ruled by wickedness: she must embrace her inner demons to help those she loves. Hoping the ends will justify the means, Anne starts down a slippery slope that, if she lets temptation guide her, could lead her straight to the underworld.

Anne is thrust back into the world she thought she had left for good. Teddy brings her back to Wormwood on the pretext that her mother sent him to bring her back. When she returns, it feels like all she did was for nothing. After the events of the last book, Ben is now a student and has to compete in the Big V, the island has been turned over to Cania Christi and Pilot is back. The only good thing is that Villicus is no longer headmaster and is replaced by Dia Voletto, whom seems a lot better than Villicus. Anne now has to help Ben win the Big V and try to destroy Cania Christy so no-one else has to go through it. She also must figure out why the new headmaster has such an interest in her and just who are the new teachers. Annes life is about to change forever!! I loved the first book, The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant (see my review HERE) so when I saw this on Netgalley I jumped at the chance to read it. All I can say is wow, if you liked book 1 then you will love this. It was amazing! Anne is back and better than ever. She returns to the island and feels like all she did was for nothing. While she defeated Villicus he is still there, just not the principal anymore. Her dad is now working for the island and Ben is a student. Everything looks grim and she doesn't know what to do. Ben only has this year to be in the running for the Big V or suffer the consequences. Anne wants Ben to give the Big V his all but he just wants to spend his time with Anne. She wont stand for that and as she learns some truly surprising things, she does something for him that will help him be in the running. Anne was so stronger in this book. She knows whats at stake now and will do anything she can to help Ben win. She learns some things about herself that will make or break her but will she be able to battle both the inner demons and outer ones?? The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant was such a roller coaster. Secrets upon Secrets were revealed and we find out some truly surprising things. You never know if someone is who they are supposed to be and it's hard to trust anyone. I devoured the book and was left gasping with some of the things revealed. This book played with my emotions but in a good way. I mean, come on!! Molly, Teddy, Dia and Anne all have things revealed that I didn't see coming!! Lol. So much happens in such a short time that it leaves you reeling. Anyway, The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant was amazing. An extremely fast paced and engaging plot with some truly surprising twists, this book is a must read. Its one heck of a second book and while it answers a lot of questions, we are still left with more also add in the extra characters and their stories, well lets just say that I need book 3 like yesterday. Its jam packed with action, magic, secrets, twists, and basically anything you want in a great read. There's so much I want to talk about but I can't because of spoilers so all I'll say is you need to read this series!! It's such a unique and amazing series and one that captured my heart. This is one of my favourite reads this year and I so can not wait to see what happens next. It's a must read series!!

Anne Merchant has been born again, but I bet it is not quite what you are thinking, more like being brought back from the dead on Wormwood Island, where caution must be taken because the gates of hell beckons and her life is on the line, and the suspense reaches a level that kept my fear for her and those around her at a high level…waiting and hoping…

I was completely dumbfounded when The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant ended. The moment of truth was not what I had suspected at all and by the time the climax and cliffhanger came to be, I was quite spent. Here we are now and I’ll try to write this review without spoilers! Anne returns to Cania Christi (school), not by choice. It’s established at the beginning that she has a mission and the consequences affect many people. Things are looking bleak and this is not at all where Anne thought she’d be. She's returning to a number of changes such as a new dean whose flare for flamboyance and over-the-top gestures are the talk of the school. His singular attention towards Anne is especially irksome to her.  Even I felt a little uneasy by his flirtatiousness. However, Anne being Anne handles it all in stride, making the boundaries very clear. Returning to school also finds her relationships with several people changed like Teddy, who was central to her getting acclimated in the first book. He needs her as much as she needs him. Another one is her boyfriend Ben, who she loves desperately. She wants nothing more than to give him a second chance at life even if that may be without her. All her good intentions land them in some trouble as things go awry a bit. Her foes, old and new are many as they return to plague Anne too. There are two story arcs going here – one, rescuing Ben which is the main impetus for everything she does. Two, take down a few bad guys on the way. In planning out her scheme, she learns that there's more to the mystery of Wormwood Island, and she's one of those mysteries. This proves to be almost too much but when it comes down to it, she knows what needs to be done so she can help the people she cares about. The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant shows a smarter, braver and more resourceful Anne who shouldn’t be underestimated.  This doesn’t mean that she won’t make mistakes.  Everyone has much at stake making it hard to discern who has an agenda and who is genuine. Perhaps the toughest road ahead is Anne's own battle of wills with herself as she unearths more information. Ride through hell and back with Anne - it won't be boring!
