Overview

The Wind and the Sea by Marsha Canham

Nineteen-year-old Courtney Farrow, daughter of Duncan Farrow, the most feared pirate on North Africa's Barbary Coast, was raised to fight, swear and think as well as if not better than most men. But the time is 1804 and the U.S. Navy is attacking and destroying pirate strongholds. In battle, Courtney, disguised as a boy, is captured and forced to become cabin boy to Lt. Adrian Ballantine, proud, handsome, and the only man who can tame her spirit. He has other things on his mind, however, namely discovering who is selling secrets to the pirates. At the same time, Courtney is trying to discover the traitor in the pirate camp who betrayed her father.

This pirate adventure/love story was full of amazing detail. It was a long story, and there are so many colorful characters and plots that I was never quite sure who were the heroes and villains in it. The love, nor violence were particularly gratuitous, but still painted a clear enough picture that you felt it's impact to the story. Courtney was a fantastic heroine and Adrian was a strong and worthy hero. Definitely worth the read!!!

It's a great story, and it's like reading 4 books at once' because it's very long, yet you don't want it to end.....

I read somewhere in the reviews when I was about to buy this book, where somebody said this was a swashbuckling tale and if you are looking for romance it wasn't here. Well I'm here to tell you, it was a tale of adventure true, but there was some pretty steamy love scenes to take your breath away! I actually have read several books by this author, 8 or 9 so far, and I can tell you she NEVER disappoints! So far I have only read one that was less than 1000 pages (it was a few pages shy of 1000)! This one on my nook was nearly 1700 pages long. Now to me I really feel like I am getting my moneys worth!! I will FOREVER be a huge fan of Mrs Canham. I can honestly say that I don't know how she comes up with this stuff. I can't imagine the amount of research she has to do to write these books, in order to provide such vivid descriptions! In short, I say, Buy this book. You will NOT be disappointed!!!

If you are reading just for sexy romance, this is not it. This is a swash bulking pirate romance. Adventure all the way. Starts out slow but then you can't put it down. Not the typical romance novel.

*MINOR SPOILERS* I think the best way to express my love for this book is to share this actual email I sent my mother while I was in the middle of reading it: "So then I ended up spending six hours yesterday immersed in a truly magnificent swashbuckling tale of pirates, broadsides, floggings, dashing naval officers, people getting hung from the rigging, evil Spanish mistresses, missing treasure, cutlass-to-handspike battles, exotic tropical islands, menacing pashas, giant explosions, a spy in the Navy, a spy among the pirates, conflicting spy-versus-spy manipulations, frothy lace dresses, mutiny, copious amounts of rum, desert islands, people being clapped in irons, ships blowing up, duels with the sneering pirate captain, and now the main characters are stranded on the wild Barbary coast and freaking EVERYBODY now has death sentences hanging over them and there are still at least two different traitors AND I AM STILL ONLY 70% DONE WITH THIS BOOK." And the final 30% is just as good!
