Bettany Sendris knows that going to the dour lord of Harrow Hall to plead for more time to pay her taxes is probably a fool's mission. However, with winter closing in on her tiny village, and barely enough food to put on her and her grandmother's table, she realizes she has no alternative.

But when the worst storm in decades strands her in Lord Greymount's gloomy castle, Bettany soon discovers that her presence there may bring some long-hidden secrets to light, secrets that could cost her more than just her heart.... (Book 7 of the Tales of the Latter Kingdoms)

Author’s Note: While this is the seventh book in this series, all Tales of the Latter Kingdoms novels are written as standalone romances and can be read in any order.

Tax time was coming near. Bettany knew their grandmother did not have enough money. What could they do, their income was meager. What if they could borrow money from Lord Greymount with a promise to repay in the summer. That that being the only option, Bettany set out to visit Lord Greymount at his castle. Barely making it through the snowstorm, Bettany awakes to find herself in a bed in someplace unfamiliar. Somehow she was brought from the entrance to the inside of the castle. Determined to please her case, Bettany is finally granted a visit to Lord Greymount. Unable to leave the castle due to a great snowstorm, Bettany finds herself more intrigued with the Lord and wants to know more about him, and finds she has feelings for him. But why does he live in a great castle with so few servants, and no women? The more time she spends at the castle, the more the feelings grow and the more she wishes to learn more. What mysteries does this great castle and this Lord hold? Another wonderful fairy tale by Christine Pope. With minimal characters, it is very easy to follow and become attached to Bettany, a simple girl with a goal. The reading is light and easy. This series is one that does not need to be read in any specific order. Sit back, pick up a fairy tale and enjoy!

This book is absolutely amazing! Christine Pope never fail to capture her audience with new and interesting stories. This is not just another fairy tale. It's much more than that. I began reading this book and I fell in love with it from the start. Common village girl who has a vague knowledge about her heritage and then suddenly finds out she was meant to save the man she comes to love from a fate he has feared? Just amazing....

This isnt your childhood fairy tale that you grow up with. This was a great twist to the classic Beauty and the Beast. I liked that first person telling of the start and thought that it read at a steady pace. This was my first read of the Latter Kingdom Tales but I am so glad that there are more for me to read.

Fairy tales for adults!!! This is a brilliantly crafted retelling of the Beauty and the Beast legend!!! Bettany Sendris is an orphan, living with her grandmother in a tiny hamlet. Their tithe is due to the local overlord and money had run out. She undertakes a long trek to plead in person for more time to pay. She arrives at the gothic style castle just as a once in a lifetime snow storm envelopes the area. Now a reluctant guest to an even more reluctant overlord, Bettany is stranded. But there is ore going on than a snow storm. Why are there no women in the castle? Why does the man in charge seem reluctant to be alone with her? This was a great read. I have to admit that I haven't read the others on this series (soon to be rectified!!!). However I felt that it didn't slow me down in immersing myself in the world. I was soon caught up in the mystery and passion of the couple. Hugely enjoyed the entire thing and I had to read it all in one go - I could not put it down!!!! Hoping there are many more to come in this series!!
