I am surprised no one has put up a reader review of this book. If your favorite Scotch whisky drinker does not own this book, they will be forever grateful once you’ve presented it to them for their birthday or any other gift-giving occasion. Not since the late Wallace Milroy declared that tasting Laphroig 10 was “like licking castle walls” has there been a more enjoyable and expert writer of single malt scotch than Dave Broom. This is THE Whisky book to own. It offers succinct tasting notes of a plethora of whisky expressions from all the operational malt distilleries in Scotland, with an insider's intimate portrait of the history and eccentricities of each distillery, grouped by region and district, and backed by Broom's lifetime of experience and firsthand knowledge, all in entertaining, easy to read language, and supported by stunning photography revealing the singular beauty of Scotland. And he includes sections for the whisky (and whiskey) of other lands, including Ireland, Canada, the USA, Japan, Australia, India and the Far East, South Africa, and the whole of Europe. One of the nicest touches is how Broom provides suggestions at the end of tasting notes for every whisky sampled, pointing them toward other expressions from within the same "flavour camp," produced by other makers, basically saying, "If you like this one , you will probably like these others as much or more." I will point out that this is not a handbook to slip into your shoulder bag or purse. This is a "coffee table" book that belongs in the library of every fan of distilled spirits, and especially lovers of single malt Scotch whisky.
