I was provided a copy of The World Below in exchange for an honest review. The story starts off with Baron Finkeiner, the ruler of the world below, convincing the sorcerer, Hume, to locate the Blade Caro; which was stolen by the Lady Elisabeth. Lady Elisabeth is one of the faerie folk, and extremely powerful. The blade of caro is the only thing that can kill the baron. The baron is a tyrant; and he treats his people as such. His people are trolls, goblins, and all types of monsters; but they still don’t deserve to be indiscriminately tortured, punished and killed. He is just awful. So I was thinking; “Cool, Hume is our hero”. I was SO wrong! Enter Mitch, just a plan regular joe, that stumbles upon Elizabeth at a party. There is an immediate attraction, and she gifts him with a charm bracelet. This bracelet is magical; it allows him see things from the world below. It starts off with him bringing home a stray cat; which turns out to be a goblin. Mitch is an all-around good guy; protecting the innocent, and standing up for what is right. He makes some of the strangest friends in his quest, and pretty much goes with the flow. He is the ultimate Hero; all good, not a bad bone in his body. I was truly enjoying the story, until we got to the goblin tickle fight. At that point, it turned into a bunch of slap stick. The story did get back on track after a bit; but I had a hard time reengaging after that point. I didn’t care for the silliness of the goblins. Some of the banter was amusing, but it through off the pace of the story for me. Overall, I liked the story. I really liked our hero Mitch, and I look forward to reading more about his adventures in the next book, Hazard of Shadows....Sara

‘The World Below’ is a stunning urban fantasy novel with quirky and lovable characters. Mitch is a former foundry worker who was injured and disfigured during a strike. When the money runs out he moves away and starts anew. Mitch found new friends who didn’t pity him or run away in fear and he even met a beautiful girl, Elizabeth. Mitch starts learning about the World Below, because he can ‘see’ more than the average human, and he ends up fulfilling his role as hero quite admirably. I loved the fantasy, the creatures, the characters, and oddly even the nasty Baron Finkbeiner. ‘The World Below’ is wonderfully gritty and brings realism to fantasy at a steady pace which leads to a raucous conclusion.

The World Below is a imaginative, snarky, funny but also dark and gorey twisting of modern day reality and ancient fae lore and fantasy. Let me hit the snarky, Elizabeth first...she's got attitude down to a science and the power to back it up. But it didn't stop there, the sarcasm and strong personas hit all the characters in this story telling. Although may times I LOL, Phillips still created some very dark and graphically detailed scenes. The evil was definitely evil, the good was maybe a little evil and the rest of the characters got completely caught up in the wake. The World Below is a refreshing and quite entertaining read. I can't wait to see what will happen to Mitch next. I received this copy of The World Below from Mike Phillips in exchange for a honest review. Mike pens "The World Below" in an original, well written and magickal plot. I found his characters to be well defined, strong and very interesting.  With a touch of humor written in, this book kept my interest from start to finish. I look forward to more from this author. The World Below is a fantastical adventure that mixing the modern world with the world of fantasy. Mitch Hardy is shunned because of his scars. Feeling lonely, misunderstood, and angry that people would treat him this way. When he makes a fresh start in a new town the people he meets are different, they do not shun him, but respect him. He even meets a beautiful girl, Elizabeth. Through a series of twist and turns Mitch finds out that Elizabeth is a Faerie and she is on a quest to find out who her father is. Elizabeth gets kidnaped by the rule of The World Below and Mitch comes to the rescue. What he discovers is more then he could every dream possible. Mike Phillips is a very talented writer that weaves a story full of fantasy, adventure, quests, and romance. It’s Labyrinth meets Star Wars! The world development is incredibly detailed and makes the reader fill like they are right there beside of Mitch during his journey. All the characters are unique and refreshing. You’ll love them and love to hate them! You can’t go wrong with the astounding fantasy novel! I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
