Overview

The World Is Saved [Bonus Tracks]

Although Sweden's Stina Nordenstam possesses a feather-light, childlike voice -- think Kate Bush, Tori Amos, or Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval -- her songs are dark and unsettling; the contrast produces magic on The World Is Saved. Nordenstam is a bit of an enigma: She never performs live, and many of her consistently excellent and intriguing albums have not seen U.S. release. Her early work, such as "Little Star," which appeared on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, often flirted with jazz and pop conventions, but she's experimented with edgy electronics (1996's Dynamite) and with deconstructed covers (1998's People Are Strange). On The World Is Saved, she turns to chamber music, with strings and horns fleshing out stately keyboards and reverb-soaked guitars, for her songs of psychological turmoil. The themes may be bleak -- this is a breakup album, epitomized by "The End of a Love Affair" ("Still we both survive," Nordenstam whispers, fatalistically) -- songs such as "Get On With Your Life" and "From the Cayman Islands with Love" are full of quiet tension and beauty. In "Winter Killing," Nordenstam sings, "I'm safer with you here" and then pauses before turning the seeming wish for security into something desperate and potentially violent by adding, "…and me there." The World Is Saved is a surprisingly complex album, one that repays close attention and rewards emotional investment.
