Just what is love? Is it just a word people use for personal gain? Is it a verb that needs creativity expression in order to understand its full meaning? Or, is it just looking in the mirror?

For Chantrelle Hayfield, love is simplicity. But, she lives in Atlanta, a complex city full of surprises. Like her chiseled, tall, and chocolate next door neighbor, Rasheed Goodmen, who could be a new love interest? But, when her best friend, Ashley Leslie, comes out about her true feelings, will Chantrelle be able to handle the convoluted feelings of others even if that means losing her simplicity?

Chantrelle’s other friends Ariel Samson and Alexis Smith could be able to guide her? But, Ariel needs to learn to be a little selfish and Alexis has to stop scheming to get by. The underworld of Atlanta will test each of these women. Because behind the spark of every dilemma, is lies and deception. Who will be able to see clearly in order to avoid tragedy?

“The Worst Dilemma” is a short erotica novel about friendship, looking for love, and making hard decisions about what you really want out of a relationship. Chantrelle, the main character, is a tattoo artist who owns several tattoo parlors and models on the side; when she catches her boyfriend having a three-some in her bed, she’s almost angry enough to give up on love. That is, until she meets the handsome, martial arts instructor Rasheed—and also finds herself physically drawn to her best friend, Ashley. Chantrelle’s other friends also struggle with relationship woes of their own, and each woman gets her own space in the story to explore her sexuality and find fulfillment.  This book is spicy and for adults only, which should appeal to erotica fans, but the best part of it is the richness of the female friendships—Chantrelle, Ashley, Ariel, and Alexis are all realistic and have their own distinct personalities, and they fight, have fun, and look out for each other’s best interests just as real women do. You come to care about Chantrelle and her choice between Rasheed and Ashley, as well as about Ariel and her search for happiness at the White Lotus. The friendships reminded me of a short version of Jennifer Weiner’s “Little Earthquakes” or “Waiting to Exhale.” (Though this is a series, so I imagine we will learn more about these women in future installments.) I did take away one star because the book could use a cleaner edit—there are some spelling/grammar errors, as well as misused words that are a little distracting. However, it’s still a good read and I would recommend it to erotica fans who are looking for a sensual book with more depth and complexity than is usual in this genre.

Reviewed by Natasha Jackson for Readers' Favorite Chantrelle Hayfield is the epitome of the modern woman. She’s a freelance model, owns a string of tattoo shops and she is a published author. Chantrelle has a lot going on in her life; great friends, a successful career and disposable income. But she’s not so lucky in love, until a dark-skinned dreamboat invades her mental and physical space…if only she knew what to do with him. The Worst Dilemma chronicles Chantrelle’s relationship mishaps and her sexual liberation, as well as the complicated love lives of her best friends Alexis, Ariel, and Ashley. Muhammed Sokhna paints an intriguing portrait of modern life in the heart of Atlanta, weaving an erotic thread through every word he writes. The Worst Dilemma is a sweltering hot erotic tale that explores all facets of our sexuality without succumbing to stereotypes. The emotion in this story is rich, whether it is between Chantrelle and her complicated relationships with her best friends or Ashley and her not so secret feelings for her best friend. The neighbor, Rasheed, who could be more presents Chantrelle with the most complicated of all dilemmas; to trust a man when she’s had nothing but bad luck with them. Muhammed Sokhna does a wonderful job of illustrating the fluid nature of sexuality and shooting down old stereotypes of what we assume sexuality is. This is the perfect example of an urban erotic romance that will have your emotions as twisted up as the characters.

Muhammed R. Sokhna has managed to pull off that rare feat; a first time novel that manages to engross and enthrall from start to finish. The four central characters are women who are sassy, racy and dynamic. As the book hurtles along, the problems for each mount up and you feel like a voyeur watching a car crash. Each of these women is formidable in their own way but has an Achilles heel of vulnerability-usually the men in their lives. The menfolk comprise ex-cons, hucksters, martial arts champions and misogynists, leading to a potent cocktail of sex, intrigue and a desperate fight for survival. The crescendo is reached at the end when the carefully constructed world of the women starts to crash around them due in part to their own flaws, but also because of blind fate. Be prepared for the river-fluid dialogue, the staccato pace of the book and characters that would enrich any genre. It is all set in a world where the simmering undercurrent of violence is never far away, but Muhammed manages to paint a very evocative and credible world. The Casper-white moon of Georgia overhangs a grim fight for survival in this wonderful debut-more of the same for part 2, please!
