This book was a very enjoyable read for several reasons. The characters were developed with a keen awareness and appreciation for the influence of an early nineteenth century New England lifestyle and environment. The characters were fashioned superbly with much care given to details that made life in New Hartford in that period come alive for for me. The ending was not one of the few that I had predicted, making it a great read from beginning to end.

I enjoyed the story and felt I got to know the characters, but some 'facts' seemed anachronistic. I'm not sure women in the mid-1800's would have been quite as bold as the leading character. Also the ending was a bit disappointing, especially considering how compelling the rest of the book had been.
