How would your life be different if you were just a bit happier every day for a year? What would you do to enjoy life just a little more day by day? Take your first step toward increased happiness with The Year of Living Happy: Finding Contentment and Connection in a Crazy World by Alli Worthington.
You do your best to live life well—you work hard to be present in the moment, take care of the people in your life, knock it out of the park at work and home. And yet somehow, you still have days (perhaps more than you'd like to admit) where you're simultaneously stressed and bored, and you wonder if you even know how to be happy. Is happiness a worthy goal? Does happiness matter to God, or does He only care about holier things?
Alli Worthington gets it. As a wife, mother of five boys, author, speaker, and entrepreneur, she knows a thing or two about being busy, stressed, and happy in the midst of a crazy world! Over the years, she's seen how happiness gets a bad rap in Christian circles, and now she is standing up to shout the good news from the roof (or the internet, as the case may be): You are allowed to be happy! Yes, you! You can be happy right now!
Get rid of the common Christian misconception that happiness is somehow not holy, and grasp God’s intention for His children—that happiness and holiness can coexist for a beautiful life.
Join Alli for The Year of Living Happy: Finding Contentment and Connection in a Crazy World and find the roots of your happiest life yet! A Year of Thankfulness is something we can all use. There is no way to ever truly thank our dear Lord enough for all that He has done for us, but it never hurts to try… and try… and try. And thankfulness in every day life is an excellent place to start. I highly recommend this book. It’s filled with interesting and beautiful advice for those of us who are thankful… and those of us who might need a little help remembering all the things we’re thankful for.
This book, The Year of Happy Living by Alli Worthington is a simple day-to-day devotional. It has a brief reading each day with a chance to then read Scripture, try a practical application technique, and to extend your thinking and meditations throughout your day. Worthington is a clear and well researched writer who provides strategies for deepening your learning with a variety of styles and techniques. She writes from experience and passion and I love that about her books. I also read Breaking Busy and got to hear her speak in our community a couple of years ago on Mother's Day. I love her consistent voice and reliability. This devotional is an easy read, but also engaging and will walk with you throughout your day. There are twelve parts that unfold through twelve months in a year, if you choose to do it day to day for an entire year. The twelve parts are titled: made to be happy, holiness is happiness, happiness is there her and now, good friends and happy hearts, finding your happy thought, happy in a world of crazy, when happiness is hard, healthy-happy-whole, choosing happiness, the power of happy words, a happy heart is good medicine, and building a happy life. I think it is really important to note that Worthington is not talking about just feeling happy all the time. She is exploring a happiness, joy really, that comes from the Lord and is deeply rooted in our souls, despite our circumstances. In her introduction she says, "I used to believe the search for happiness was a superficial pursuit, that happiness and holiness were mutually exclusive. But now I understand they go hand in hand. This work of seeking authentic happiness is important and it is holy. As we seek after the things that create real happiness in us, we find God. And when we live the life God has created us to live, securely and obediently trust in Him in all areas we are happier." "Deep joy and a happy life are not dependent upon our day-to-day life events, and they are not superficial..." I love that Worthington is committed to bringing Scripture and her modern research about our minds and bodies into one book. While not every entry did or will strike a perfect chord for me so many got me thinking and pursuing what God had for me. I have been reading this along side Dreamcather by Kelly Welk and so many of the principles are the same about how we find "happy" and true "contentment" when were are living into the dreams God has for us and into who he made us to be. Both books are interactive and I know God had them for me to work through this year. If you are looking for simple, interactive, and thought provoking "The Year of Living Happy" may just do the trick. It also would make a wonderful gift as the hardcover and inscription page makes it just perfect for that. Thanks to Booklook Bloggers for providing me with a copy of the book so I can in turn give you my honest review. All opinions are my own.
I was really excited to get my hands on this book but was upset because delivery date kept changing but after I got it I cant seam to want to put it down Alli Worthington really out did herself with this book
I do not think the UPS truck was even out of my driveway when I was already flipping through this book! The cover alone is gorgeous and so enticing that I could not wait and this book is even nicer in person than it looks in the picture! "The Year of Living Happy" is a beautiful, hardcover edition with a ribbon to mark your place, and the pages have a border of the same yellow on the cover which makes the pages look so nice as well. I am thoroughly impressed with the look and feel of the book, and that is before I even started reading it! Alli Worthington has created such a wonderful collection of devotional readings in this book! There are 100 different readings, and they are divided into 12 chapters by category; for example there is a chapter focusing on friends, another focusing on happiness in your mind (all about gratitude and mindset!), another section focusing on being happy when it is hard to be. When you open the book to a reading, you see the entire devotional as it spans the two page layout. The reading typically is about a page and quarter, then there is a box with a few statements or questions for the reader to reflect on, followed by blank lines for the reader to write down the reflections. This layout is another great feature to this book. I am going to go through this book one reading a day and work through the reflection and journaling part as well. However, there were just so many things that were jumping out at me I just had to keep turning the pages and reading. One in particular was titled Life is not a Pinterest Board; I am a huge fan of Pinterest, however it is easy for me to get caught in the mindset of not being good enough or not being able to do these amazing looking projects. Alli encourages that you take a break for 7 days from activities that make you feel less than and journal about that to see how you feel, how those days are overall, what a great challenge! Life can be crazy and overwhelming and it is so easy to get caught up in comparisons and living just trying to make it through each day and not really living life how you want; this book is a great one to challenge you on things like that and really seek to live happier each day. This would make a such a nice thinking of you gift or be a great encouragement to someone you know! *Thanks to the BookLook Bloggers Program for the complimentary copy of this book.*
