Overview

Patrick Donovan and his friends live average teenage lives. For them, life in Southern California is dull, ordinary, and without adventure. But that won't last for long. They have no way of knowing that their lives will soon take an exciting turn, and that their choices will determine the world's course. Suddenly, in one night, their lives as they know them will inexplicably change forever as a mysterious girl exposes them to an unknown force. Endowed with unimaginable power, Patrick and his companions must evade the clutches of a secret society bent on turning them into living weapons while they also wrestle their inner demons. As they are thrown into this new reality, they adopt a new name – The Young Guardians. Now they must face the sinister realities of the world and bring peace and justice to the city of Los Angeles. With the mysterious power of darkness stalking them from the shadows, Patrick and his friends must struggle to survive in a world that has become plagued with the neverending crime waves that have terrorized Los Angeles for years. However, as The Young Guardians protect the City of Angels, a mysterious enemy lurks among the shadows, an enemy that is purely evil, unimaginably powerful, and seeks to destroy Patrick and his friends. With only The Young Guardians standing between the enemy and the downfall of the world, they must face a terrifying question: Will they survive the upcoming climactic battle and fulfill their quest for world serenity, or will they fail to triumph and watch the world turn to darkness? The powers of light and darkness collide in this tale of destiny, vengeance, and redemption.

I began reading I found myself remembering my own childhood dreams of being a Superhero. I wanted to continue reading the book to find out all of their strengths and weakness, and see if they all choose the path of fighting evil. Still wondering about Brick Baxter and if or how he may re-appear in the future. The plot is left open for future installments. I wonder where that may lead.

"I have read this author before and he has a way of writing page turning material. In this new book he follows a group of LA youths who are transformed from mere mortals into protectors for the benefit of humanity. An interesting aspect of this book is that in a character appendix, the author lists all of the super powers of his heroes. This drama plays out in the area around Los Angeles, and their arch enemy is the Cyber Shadow who is tall, with red eyes, and dresses in black and grey armor. He is a power hungry madman who wants to be King of the World. It is the Young Guardian’s job to make sure that does not happen. All of the battling leads to a dramatic confrontation, but it is not the end of the story. Although the Shadow is defeated, it turns out that he has not been vanquished. The author is a talented story teller and includes many imaginative plot twists in this tale. This is a fast paced, dialog driver thriller that is hard to put down."

Read this with my five year old and we both loved it. Even though it is geared more for a teen audience, he was able to follow the plot line and begged me to read "just one more chapter" night after night

There is a young college man who has written 2 books and is now on the 3rd book. A trilogy and maybe the start of a series? At first I thought only adventure stories as I began to read, but it has a depth of problems faced and overcome. It is not just the fight of good and evil. It deals with problems that many people face. Loss of family members, finding a new primary group. Putting the past behind, to strive for a worthwhile future. And that's only in the first book. As the main characters continue they are met with humor as well as adventure by adding in new characters. Added in are struggles with self in not being more of whatever might have been possible in the past. Learning to be a stronger person with faced limitations. What depth of hidden human understanding it is! Just in a group of teenagers binding together to fight a common evil foe.  I am looking forward to reading Grady Brown's future books. I believe these stories from a highly imaginative new writer could be the start of something for movies or TV series once they are on the market with a large following. Even though the main characters are young , these could be for several generations to enjoy. I am not a teen or young adult. As a senior citizen I am looking forward to older people ( except for the evil ones) to be introduced.
