The Zander family consists of Pa, Ma, and their two children, Bernie and Clara. They are all dissatisfied with their lifestyles and each takes exciting actions to become more satisfied with how they are living. Pa is dissatisfied because he has a low paying factory job and plays his violin only on weekends with a band which provides music for various social events. His dissatisfaction increases when he loses the fingers of one hand in a factory accident and both sources of income vanish. Ma is dissatisfied because both of her sisters married well-to-do men and their lifestyles far surpassed hers. Bernie is dissatisfied because he had a polio attack which left him with a hunched back and stunted his growth. He did not want to live as a handicapped person. Clara was an attractive girl and was dissatisfied with her relationship with her boy friend.The story has many interesting events in which the family upgrades its lifestyles.
