Reviewed by Brenda Casto for Readers' Favorite Their Tangled Hearts by Mary DeWeber is more than just another inspirational romance; instead it's a heart wrenching story of a woman and man overcoming the many tragedies that life often throws our way in order to find the happiness that God intends for us all. Emma Winter has spent the last five years carrying around hurts that she blames herself for. She has built such a wall around her heart that it seems no one or nothing can penetrate it. When her friend Doc asks her for a favor, which is going to cook at a Colorado ranch, she hesitantly agrees, but when she realizes that she will be working with disabled children she isn't sure that she can stay. Jake Peterson's sister owns the ranch and he has been staying there for a while to overcome the tragedy that occurred in his life. Emma and Jake are drawn together in friendship, but when Jake realises he wants more he isn't sure he can penetrate the wall Emma has built around her heart. Jake and Emma are well written characters who are going through real life issues which makes it very easy to relate to them. My heart broke for Emma as I learned her story, the blame she placed on herself was so easy to understand. While there was a sense of sadness around her, the author also gave her strength, allowing for a multi-faceted, real life character that was very easy to connect with. Jake's character was just as riveting, his tragedy was just as heart wrenching, and I couldn't help but want the best for both of the characters. I became totally absorbed in their lives, which were far from predictable. Instead of a smoothly flowing plot, Ms. DeWeber throws in plenty of surprising curves which made for a page turning read. Descriptive writing made it easy to feel the atmosphere of the ranch along with the camaraderie that was present between the various people on the ranch. While Their Tangled Hearts provides several life lessons, Ms. DeWeber gets her point across without sounding preachy - instead the characters and their faith just enhance each other, making the story realistic and easy to relate to. Mary DeWeber certainly knows how to tell an emotionally compelling story that makes you laugh and cry, but mostly it shows how God can take hurt, blame, anger and loss and turn it into healing if only we allow it.

I found this author not only to be a delight but her writing to be outstanding. I didn’t know if I really wanted to read this book at first. I am SO GLAD I did, this book has a lot to say with lots of real life lesson to remember. Tragedy can bring us down and destroy your life in a heartbeat, it is up to us to find our way out to rise above and start over. To forgive and forget are two of the hardest things we will ever do as Emma and Jake find out. Each have had the worse tragedy to go through and each must find their way back to the living to learn to not only love again but to live again. Emma has hit rock bottom the only way is to go up but her lose is one of the greatest anyone could go through. She doesn’t want to climb out, she is just going through the motions of life. Doc who is more or less her adopted father cannot stand to see her live this way. He is doing his best to bring back the spark she use to have. He decides once again to try to push her back into life. Emma goes along with it but she has her doubts. When she gets to the ranch and finds out what kind of a ranch it is she thinks Doc has lost his mind. How could he do this to her knowing the hard time she was having, there is no way she can stay. She calls Doc and tells him so, he talks her into staying but times are going to be hard. Emma has so many secrets that she needs to hide, what will everyone think when and if they find out the truth? Jake has a few secrets of his owns and knows all about tragedy for he has went through much, his lose is also one of the greatest you could have. He has learnt to live again and has forgiven but he needs to learn to truly get over his lost he must learn to love again. Jake know Emma has had some bad times, her first night there he finds her in a nightmare. He knows there is much to know and he must go slowly. Over the few weeks she is there he is starting to fall in love with her but he doesn’t want to rush her, he knows she must find her way. They each have secrets that will come out, can they learn that they might be the best things each has ever had? This was a powerful, loving, exciting clean read where you learn so much. To forgive as Emma did is hard, I am not sure I would have been able to. She must forgive herself for something she has no control over along with forgiving the man who caused her downfall. That last one is a tough one…. There wasn’t anything I did not totally love about this book, I do wish there was a book telling Jake’s sister and her husband’s story I feel that would be a wonderful story to read. The author has a way of bring you right in to the heart of the story leaving you heartbroken but keeping you smiling and even laughing at times. She writes a compelling story of lost, love, heartbreak and rebirth. I so looking forward to reading more of her work.

This was a nice Christian romance, however the editing was nonexistent--many misspelled words incorrect usage of words.

Their Tangled Hearts is quite the surprising romantic novel that has intriguing backstory. It introduces us to Emma, a songwriter, whose tragic past continues to haunt her. Under false pretenses, her godfather Doc set her up to work for a couple who runs a cattle ranch. Her life turns upside down when she meets Jake. Clearly, she’s not prepared to let someone into her life. She constantly struggles with herself as her heart slowly starts to open up. Still, she has to come into terms with her loss. There is a level of complexity in Emma’s character that makes her very interesting and you can’t help but feel her pain, guilt, and frustration. The story is well-written and structured in a way to keep the reader guessing on what’s to come next. As the story progresses, secrets are revealed and we begin to understand why certain things are the way they are. All the elements come together seamlessly, which makes for a heartwarming (and satisfying) conclusion.

‘Their Tangled Hearts’ is a Christian romance that finds the heroine, Emma, at a crossroads in her life and struggling to heal from her own loss when she takes a job at a ranch for disabled children.  She finds herself overwhelmed by her life, her new situation and the past but decides to take a leap of faith and start a new chapter of her life.  Aided by the memorable character of Doc, who is constantly trying to ‘draw her out,’ Emma’s journey is one that is engrossing, moving and immediately captivated me.  This is a romance, yes, but its larger themes of healing through connection with others, forgiveness and moving forward transcend the normal romance novel.  Anyone who has lived through tragedy or has had difficulty letting go of the past and moving forward (and that’s probably most of us) will be able to relate to this lovely, gentle story.  The characters are vividly and thoughtfully drawn and they are really the crux of the story here.  This book would make a great gift for anyone in the midst of life changes or grappling with letting go.  Highly recommended.
