Trapped in a land where government leaders want her dead, Julia is forced to run for her life with Evan and Reece, the two boys who brought her here. They're on their own in a hostile landscape ruled by scavengers and thieves.

But Evan is battling a deadly infection, and Julia finds herself racing against time as she tries to find the medicine that will save his life. She and Reece find an unlikely ally-Jo, a girl they free after finding her captured in a bandits' hideout.

As the four travel across the country, Julia has something else to worry about-her memories are slowly being replaced by the Julia of Evan and Reece's world. Will they find a way to send Julia home before it's too late? Or will Julia's body and mind be trapped THERE?

There is the second book in the On The Other Side series by Denise Grover Swank. As I mentioned in a previous review, I normally don't read this genre or type of story, but since I'm a fan of this author's other books, I thought I would give it a chance. I'm really glad I did! In this book, Julia and her friends are forced to run for their lives after being chased by government leaders who want to capture them. They are living in an alternate universe and go on a journey through the ruined country with a new "ally", Jo. Can they trust her or is she there as a spy? Both books were excellent and readers of any age will enjoy them, not only young adults. I'm hoping for a third book in this series so I can see where the characters are now and what they have been up to!

This book made this geek girl very happy! I highly advise against reading this book if you have not read Here – On The Otherside #1. I am also a science fiction nerd and I love the concept of alternate universes. The idea that there are worlds just like ours and that they have “us” on them is just too cool for words. In the world that Julia, Evan and Reece are on now, the Cuban Missile Crisis actual happened the planet is a hard and dissolute place. Evan has an infection that is slowly killing him and the trio are on the run for a cure and to find Reece’s mom. Not only does Julia have to battle the nuclear wasteland, a government (the United Regions) who put a price on her head and bandits, she is also battling against her own mind. The Julia from our Earth is starting to have memories that are not hers. They are the memories of the Julia from There. Poor girl! First Julia deals with guilt from killing her best friend, gets kicked out of her school and shunned by her family. Then she unknowingly travels to an alternate world with that world’s Evan….who she is in love with…who is slowly dying…and now she is losing her own memories and sense of self. And to knock Julia for a six, the memories is she acquiring is Other Julia being in love with Reece. I am sometimes not a fan of love triangles but this one was original and had a great deal of purpose and drama. I am happy to say that Julia gets some much needed Girl Power! While on the run, the trio help a girl, Jo, escape the bandits. Jo adds a great deal of dimension and her fierceness helps Julia deal with the absolute crap storm that has become her life. The fast-paced book picked up even more steam towards the end. I could not turn (or swipe) the pages fast enough. The ending was emotional and satisfying, but more importantly, believable. This sci fi geek girl would love this book no matter what world I read it on.
