About the Author

Michael Bennett is a three-time Pro Bowler, Pro Bowl MVP, Super Bowl Champion, and two-time NFC Champion. He has gained international recognition for his public support for the Black Lives Matter Movement, women's rights, and other social justice causes. In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans by The Root, was the Seattle Seahawks nominee for the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year award, and was honored along with his brother Martellus with a BET Shine a Light award for exceptional service. He is the cofounder with Pele Bennett of The Bennett Foundation, which educates underserved children and communities through free, accessible programming. He has held free camps and health clinics in Seattle, in his hometown of Houston, in his current offseason home, Honolulu, and in South Dakota on the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. He donates all of his endorsement money and the proceeds from his jersey sales to fund health and education projects for poor and underserved youth and minority communities, and recently expanded his reach globally to support STEM programming in Africa. Dave Zirin is the sports editor for the Nation and the author of several books, most recently Brazil's Dance with the Devil. Named one of UTNE Reader's "Fifty Visionaries Who Are Changing Our World," Zirin is a frequent guest on MSNBC, ESPN, and Democracy Now! He hosts WPFW's The Collision with Etan Thomas and has been called "the best sportswriter in the United States," by Robert Lipsyte.

This book should be REQUIRED READING for the entire country. Can we, like, give tax breaks for book reports or something? Blast the audio version over the speaker systems of all public gathering places? I’m kidding.... about the federal mandate part at least lol. Seriously though, DON’T LET THE TITLE SCARE YOU!!! This book is one of the best, most eloquent, fair minded breakdowns of the thoughts & feelings of a large part of the African diaspora (particularly those of us in the United States) I’ve come across. It lays out the facts and history and cultural nuances that explain a myriad of issues from Black Lives Matter to the prison pipeline to food deserts. Also, between NFL/NCAA insider stories, Bennett flawlessly pokes holes that let us see the politics & sometimes, flat out inhumanity behind the sports industry(ies) America worships. He puts a real person with real emotions - a father, a husband, a son, a human - behind the anthem kneeling & racial profiling. At the same time, he manages to present a fair & balanced account of some of the most controversial civil rights issues of our time. Things That Make White People Uncomfortable is the story behind all of the statistics Malcolm Jenkins held up on poster boards instead of answering questions for the media. It is why activists from Martin & Malcolm to Richard Sherman & Marshawn Lynch willingly volunteered themselves as tributes. It is all the things I want to say but struggle to get out without losing my temper when someone says ‘All Lives Matter’ or that kneeling is treasonous or unpatriotic. It is the book we have been wishing & waiting for Colin Kaepernick to write & the manual for parenting black children. PLEASE read it - and share it with everyone you know. I’m literally begging you.
