The Denise Grover Swank magic has struck again!  Thirty-four and a Half Predicaments is as powerful as any other in the series, and because we have become so invested in the characters this one it sure to grab the reader’s heart even quicker.  To say that I was emotionally wrung out by time I reached the end of the novel would be to understate the effect Rose’s “predicaments” have on me.  I love these people!  That is Swank’s magic, the ability to create characters that we love or hate with all our hearts and to create plots that keep those hearts pounding. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I honestly loved it!

Some series lose their steam after 6 books, but this is not the case with 34 1/2. I am not ashamed to say that I started to read this book as soon as it was released at midnight. Rose tries to help Neely Kate with her depression by researching more of her birth mother's past. Rose’s mother died in a car crash when Rose was only a few years old. Everyone, the police included, believed it was an accident; however, Rose begins to think her mother has been murdered. Past secrets, lies and events are still being felt in the present. Skeeter and Rose start to grow close as Rose seems to be embracing her role as the mysterious Lady in Black. This unlikely friendship between two kindred spirits add depth to both characters and the series as a whole. When Skeeter was introduced back in 29 ½, I never would have seen this friendship coming but now it makes complete sense. That is the beauty of Denise’s writing – the way she can weave such intricate storylines and make the seemly absurd absolutely believable and intriguing. Rose continues to speak her mind and show the world that she is not the same meek girl from a year ago. The love from Mason and the strong friendships with Neely Kate, Bruce Wayne and Maeve have helped Rose blossom into a strong, brave and caring woman. I do have to admit that with Rose being more confident, she is becoming a bit more stubborn. She expects totally honesty from others yet she is keeping her own secrets. There is a double standard there yet I can see why she feels that way. No one is perfect and seeing Rose develop both positive and negative qualities make her more real and lovable to me. I hardly ever give books 5 stars, but this book was just that great.

*blink* *blink*...... That was what happened when I ended the book. But in that "Holy *enter explicit word of choice* what just happened? When is the next book? I NEED ANSWERS!" sort of way. Then I may have ranted at my husband like a crazy person about it. Rose reprises her role as the Lady in Black, has to juggle her new secret role and her relationship not just with her DA boyfriend, but the new-ish Sheriff in town who happens to be her ex-boyfriend. You will be on the edge of your seat, turning pages, biting nails and yelling aloud in exasperation, shock, and betrayal. And then you will be begging for the next book.

Love Rose Gardner and this one was a complex and intriguing plot. However as I was nearing the end I got a bad feeling it would end in a cliffhanger because there was not enough chapters left to tie it up. That is one doozy of a cliffhanger and had I known I would have waited till next book was out before reading.

Rose Gardner is becoming a really good friend. Great series and love the inbetween books. Rose is becoming more and more of a grownup facing challenges and helping her friends. Hope she has many more adventures.

Thirty-Four and a Half Predicaments is book number seven in the Rose Gardner series by Denise Grover Swank. First, let’s get this out of the way. “Hello, my name is Carol and I am a Rose Gardner addict.” Whew! Ok, I feel better now. I have waited for this installment to the series for so long and it was everything I thought it would be and more. My fingernails are chewed down to the nub and I might need high blood pressure medicine now. Denise Grover Swank, I’ll send you the doctor bill. Rose Gardner is loyal to her friends and she will do anything for them. Now, Neely Kate needs her to help to get over her sadness. So what would cheer up Neely Kate best? A good mystery to solve. Rose wants to know more about her mother. She has the journal she kept but she has so many questions. With things slow at her landscaping business, it is the perfect time to get Neely Kate’s mind onto something else but her own sadness so they decide to work together to piece together the events leading up to her mother’s death. Joe and Mason seem to have come to some sort of working relationship but they aren’t telling Rose much of anything as to what they are working on. Joe’s sister, Kate, is still in town and Rose is no closer to understanding what she is trying to do other than to aggravate Rose. “If only I could stay out of trouble. Try though I might, trouble seemed to have a knack for following me.” Rose and Neely Kate, as usual, get themselves into all kinds of crazy predicaments as they question people about Rose’s mother. The more they uncover, though, the more Rose realizes that perhaps some of these secrets were better left hidden. It’s beginning to look like her mother might have been involved in something unsavory. There are also questions regarding Rose’s father. Does she really want to find out the answers? I feel like I got to know Skeeter Malcolm better in this book. He needs Rose to take up her role as The Lady in Black again to help Skeeter get some information. I love how Skeeter doesn’t intimidate Rose, no matter how hard he tries. I know he is the Lord of the Underworld and all but I kind of like him. I like the way he is with Rose. Their relationship, I feel, takes another step in this book. Of everyone involved in her life, it seems like he is the one who is the most honest with her. And Jed, her body guard. I wonder if he has a crush on Rose? He would absolutely do anything for her. Rose is getting better and better control over her visions. She still can’t control it when she has random visions but she is getting better at forcing and directing them. I am concerned, though, with some side effects she is experiencing from them. As Rose and Neely Kate investigate her mother’s past, Rose begins finding threatening notes on her truck. And someone tries to run her off the road when she is in Mason’s car. Were they trying to hurt Rose or did they think it was Mason? Are their lives in danger? This was such a good book. Rose and Mason seem stronger than ever but there are so many secrets. And Rose just can’t seem to keep herself out of trouble. I realize this is an ongoing series but I completely DID NOT expect that cliff hanger ending. I might have shrieked out loud! I am still shocked! So now the countdown starts until November when Thirty-Five and a Half Conspiracies comes out. I don’t know how I will ever make it.

This series just keeps getting better and better. Denise really knows how to a great series. Rose is on another mystery. This time she goes to someone for help that I never saw coming. But will this person be able to help her, or is she going to find something that will put her in a heap of trouble? This is probably my favorite so far. There is so much suspense on this book that you can't help reading it in one sitting.  If there were more stars to give then I would. I'm not going to say any more except, I need more now!!!! I don't want to wait till the fall. Get this book NOW!!!!!!
