Great single book about the civil war.

The book has a library withdrawal plate on the first few pages (Kansas City Library - 1966); The book is not separated by chapters, etc. but just runs on and on, often with spaces and inserted text from ???? as well as words that don't make sense. For example, in one sentence there is the word "ho", but in rereading it, the word would be "he"; don't bother with the free book. If you want a book that reads well, buy the version which Is for sale.

Even though free, don'r bother. Riddled with typos, virtually unreadable.

For a long time I ignored many of the books of Bruce Catton as well as the ACW occassionally available in Philippine bookstores. After buying and reading an old pocket book edition of This Hallowed Ground, I was instantly and forever hooked. Catton's writing provides the best example of how history ought to be written. In my country where there are quite a lot of misconceptions about US and the Americans, this is the book I always recommend and lend to friends so they can gain a better insight about the former's character and past. I wrote a few military history articles in some Philippine publications but Catton will always be a model as a writer and a historian. All of this thanks to This Hallowed Ground.
