This Is Where I Came In [Enhanced]

What do Gram Parsons, Al Green, and Destiny's Child have in common? They've all covered Bee Gees songs. Yep, contrary to most Americans' perception, the brothers Gibb are more than just Australian men in white suits who infected the world with disco fever 25 years ago. Their newest album, This Is Where I Come In, is their 28th and features their strongest batch of songs since...well, since they sported those sharp white suits. The title track (and single) boasts the dynamic songcraft and vocal interplay of '60s Bee Gees classics like "New York Mining Disaster 1941." On top of Maurice's guitar picking come Robin's weepy crooning, then Barry's whispery "Jive Talkin' " vocals, then the brothers' three-part harmonies, then Robin again, who turns up the volume (and the vibrato) to belt out the Gibbses' newest impassioned vow: "Time has gone/But I'll go anywhere/Yes, I'll go anywhere with you." Other standouts include the power-poppy "She Keeps on Coming" (about as rockin' as the Bee Gees get), Barry's vaudevillian "Technicolor Dreams," and the inspirational symphonic ballad "The Extra Mile," which they composed for the 2000 Sidney Olympics. The only downside is the Bee Gees' frequent use of new-wave-style drum programming and synthesizers. Their snazzy songs -- and their soaring vocals -- deserve better.
