Thomson: Symphonies Nos. 1-3, Pilgrims and Pioneers based on 0 ratings. 1 reviews.
Virgil Thomson is remembered more as a critic than as a composer. He is certainly remembered for his opera "Four Saints in Three Acts", his memorable film scores, and a few other works. I bought this CD only for the Symphony on a Hymn Tune (Symphony No. 1). However, I must say that I really enjoyed all three of the symphonies and the film score suite Pilgrims and Pioneers. The performances are good and at Naxos' price, you can hardly do better than to snap up this CD right away. It is worth owning this CD for the Symphony on a Hymn Tune alone. Virgil Thomson was a great and important figure in American music both as a critic and a composer. His accessible scores betray an impish sense of humour at times, most notably in the perverse Amen cadence that ends his Symphony on a Hymn Tune.
