Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Natalie M Webster, MD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: One of the eight volumes in the High-Yield Pathology series, this book covers non-neoplastic and neoplastic disorders of the entire thoracic cavity including lung, pleura, pericardium, heart, thymus, and mediastinum.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the pathology of the entire thorax in a bulleted format with extensive illustrations. There are many books available on the pathology of the thoracic cavity, but this one accomplishes its stated goals well.
Audience: It provides an in-depth, yet succinct source of information for busy surgical pathologists or pathology residents. The author is a pathologist specializing in pediatric and cardiopulmonary pathology.
Features: The book covers disease categories of each organ in the thoracic cavity, including congenital, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic. Chapters use a bulleted format, which may not appeal to readers who prefer a more narrative presentation. The book also relies heavily on gross photographs and photomicrographs. Fortunately, these are of high quality and are used appropriately.
Assessment: This is a very useful book for surgical pathologists or pathology residents. Unlike other books in this area of surgical pathology, it is not intended to be a primary source of information on the pathology of the thorax and should not be used as such. It is intended to be a quick reference with numerous useful photomicrographs. This book serves this purpose well and would be a practical addition to a pathologist's library.
