Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Young horse lovers will enjoy reading and learning about the Thoroughbred horse. The introductory information begins in the first chapter with the physical description and characteristics of this breed of horse. Many of these horses are used for racing and can run at 45 miles per hour. The text briefly describes the life of a foal that is to be a racehorse. Although people tend to associate Thoroughbreds with racing, there are other activities, like dressage, described in the final chapter. Readers may need an introduction to the nonfiction text features such as chapter headings, label, inset, glossary, and index. Also, support may be needed for the content vocabulary; it would have been helpful to use bold print in the text for the words located in the glossary. Color photographs of the horse are found throughout the book. Those children interested in further information about the Thoroughbred will find a short list of other book titles and the FactHound Internet site at the back of the book. This book is one of six in the "Horses" series, which features other breeds of horses presented in a similar format. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
