Overview

Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN by James Andrew Miller, Tom Shales, Matt McCarthy, Joan Baker

ESPN began as an outrageous gamble with a lineup that included Australian Rules Football, rodeo, and a rinky-dinky clip show called Sports Center. Today the empire stretches far beyond television into radio, magazines, mobile phones, restaurants, video games and more, while ESPN's personalities have become global superstars to rival the sports icons they cover.

Chris Berman, Robin Roberts, Keith Olbermann, Hannah Storm, Bill Simmons, Tony Kornheiser, Stuart Scott, Erin Andrews, Mike Ditka, Bob Knight, and scores of others speak openly about the games, shows, scandals, gambling addictions, bitter rivalries, and sudden suspensions that make up the network's soaring and stormy history. The result is a wild, smart, effervescent story of triumph, genius, ego, and the rise of an empire unlike any television had ever seen.

As a huge sports fan and an avid watcher of ESPN, I was really excited to read this book. It is a very in-depth look at the early years of the company and its rise to become the empire it is today. I was really hoping for more candid interviews and behind the scenes stories from the on-air talent and athletes, but if you are a sports fan this one is probably worth a look.

Slow at times but does a great job showing how ESPN has turned into the power it is today

This oral history of The Worldwide Leader in Sports blends interviews with a countless number of sports personnel - bith inside and outside of the company - plus athletes, celebrities and anyone else affiliated with the network. Overall, the authors pulled off a very difficult task, namely blending the oral history, interviews, etc. with very limited editorial commentary along the way. This, however, did create several periods of awkward transitions between topics. Overall, a very interesting look into ESPN as a company, even if the reader leaves less impressed with the organization than before picking up the book.

This is a very good read if you are a sports fan! There are allot of antecdotes that I was completely unaware of in regards to many of the personalities that I watched over the years on ESPN. There are many stories behind the events that we watched unfold on screen, such as the death of Tom Mees and the Rush Limbaugh debacle. Sports fans will not be disappointed, but this is probably not the best book for anyone who does not enjoy sports.

This book kept me interested from start to finish. The insights into the personalities involved through the years make for great subject matter.
