Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Three tales with the title characters in common: Puss-in-Boots, Town Mouse and Country Mouse, and Dick Whittington and His Cat share space in this combination picture book. The three tales are retold with some minor language adjustments to enhance readability. The retellings move along swiftly and with sense of humor faithful to the original tales. Puss still manages to turn Tom into a Marquis worthy of the King's daughter; the town mouse and country mouse belong at home; and Dick Whittington's cat inadvertently becomes the source of all his good fortune. The illustrations are consistent in tone and color throughout the three stories and do a particularly good job of conveying feelings through facial expressions. This is a very serviceable volume that provides three well-known tales in one fell swoop. If you need one story, you might consider this as an alternative that provides bonus stories as well. 2004, Kids Can Press, Ages 6 to 12.

K-Gr 4-This addition to the series contains "Puss-in-Boots," "Town Mouse and Country Mouse," and "Dick Whittington and His Cat." The retellings are straightforward and simple. The full- and half-page illustrations are rendered in bright acrylics; occasional inset images break up the texts. The bold colors and angular lines give the artwork a primitive look. The most interesting thing about the book is that it gathers together folktales that deal with a unifying theme: cats and mice. For more outstanding versions of these stories, refer to classics by Paul Galdone, Fred Marcellino, Marcia Brown, and Jan Brett.-Linda M.
