Three Rivers A Gateway To Love Chloe T. Barlow by Chloe T. Barlow

*USA Today Bestselling Series*

"A heartbreaking tale of letting go and learning to love again. A jaw-dropping debut novel you have to read." - Helena Newbury, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author.

How do you start over when you gave everything to one life, one plan, and lost it all?

Althea refuses to allow herself to love again. Imprisoned in grief at 24 after her husband's sudden death, she's convinced her heart died along with him. She spends her days honoring his memory by clinging to the legal career he helped her to build and to the remaining pieces linking them together.

Griffen's been running from his past. Despite success as an author and investigative journalist, he's been traveling through life on autopilot. For a decade, he's chosen perilous adventures and meaningless sex over the danger of any attachments. When he finally returns home to Pittsburgh, he's slammed by the awakened memories and regret he's spent years trying to escape.

A chance encounter brings them together. Their instant desire for each other – and the bond they discover between them – shocks them both. Despite her best efforts, Althea can't resist Griffen's charm or his intriguing proposition – if she agrees to a no-strings affair with him for the two weeks he's in town, he swears he'll walk away when their time is up. Assured she can test the waters of a new life while keeping her vow never to betray her husband's memory by opening her heart to another, Althea throws herself into the escape Griffen provides her.

Their perfect plans go awry when the intensity of their connection overwhelms them. Will they risk it all on the chance of something great together...or will the power of their secrets and guilt tear them apart?

Three Rivers is Chloe T. Barlow’s debut novel and first in the Gateway to Love Series. From the outset, the well-crafted prologue had me glued to the novel and I couldn’t put it down. Althea Taylor is widowed early in the novel. Her life is shattered and she doesn’t know how she can live without her husband, Jack. Thankfully, she has two really close friends along with her mother and mother-in-law that help her along the way. Nicholas Griffen Tate is Jack’s best friend. He left Pittsburgh right after high school and has never returned. He is an investigative journalist and well known author. Since leaving Pittsburgh, Nick has changed his name to Griffen. He wanted to remove all ties from his childhood, so when her mother-in-law invites Nick to her grandson’s birthday party Althea has no idea they are the same person. Althea has never gotten over Jack’s death so her friends finally convince her to get out and enjoy life. She meets Griffen at a bar and spends the night with him. When she discovers who Griffen is, she chooses to spend only two weeks with him. That’s all she can afford because she doesn’t want to establish ties. Griffen and Althea develop a strong bond and decide to spend his time in Pittsburgh together but when his teaching assignment is up, they agree to end their relationship. Althea finally has found someone she thinks she can care for but doesn’t want to commit for fear of losing him, while Griffen who fears commitment wants to take a chance on it. We are treated to many twists and turns along the way. Ms. Barlow’s research into grief comes through in her writing. The feelings and emotions that were brought to the characters were written so well that one felt like they are one with them as they experienced the rollercoaster of thoughts and feelings. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it. I have added Ms. Barlow to the top of my list of authors to recommend. I can’t wait for the next installment in the Gateway to Love Series.

I was lucky enough to have won this book on facebook. I had read about it and wanted to read it, but my TBR is so huge. However, something about it just called to me and I had to drop everything and read it. This is a story of love, loss, pain, guilt, regret, forgiveness, angst, friendship and suspense. Chloe somehow gets all these emotions into the book with out being overwhelming or pushy. The writing is brilliant and the story is unique. Althea tragically loses her husband and she can't seem to let go of the loss and guilt she feels. She has amazing friends who are supportive of her but get her to see that it's time she moves on. She meets a handsome stranger and feels a connection with him that she hasn't had since her late husband. Griffen returns to Pittsburgh and sees Althea and knows that he has to have her. Their initial meeting is funny and very steamy. I love Griffen! He has a way with words that had me sighing through the entire book. Griffen and Tea have such amazing chemistry both in and out of bed. Their conversations are deep and meaning and fun and flirty. I love the nicknames they have for each other and the sex is HOT! I loved that this story was different. Not only the plot, but the characters, the feelings and even the sex scenes. I didn't feel like I was reading "another romance" story at all. The secondary characters were such a huge part of the story that I felt like I was there with them. Tea and her friends make me miss my girls! And Trey? Hello! Can Griffen and Tea move past their regret and guilt and find happiness in each other's arms? Will the past come back and put a wedge between them? Do not miss this amazing story! "Do I make you nervous? He asked. "A little," she muttered in a voice she barely recognized. "Just breathe, " he whispered. Other than that she was hyper-focused - on him: his impossible aqua blue eyes (seriously, is that even a real eye color?); his broad shoulders; that delicious mouth; the way his slightly shaggy hair grazed his dark brows. Everything about him was hardwired to excite her on every level. "Really? Ah, no, I’m a sweetheart." "I'll hold you to that, Althea. In fact," he said, placing a hand at her lower back until she gasped, "I would like to hold you to a lot of things." "Ooh, that's a good line." "A line? " he asked, his hand leaving her back to rest on his chest, his brow furrowing in a perfect image of false hurt. "You wound me, gorgeous." "I'm sure your ego will recover." "I'm not sure, I may need a bit of special attention, just to be sure." She rolled her eyes at him again and he simply smirked right back at her. "Favorite song?" "In Your Eyes, but only in Say Anything." He raised an eyebrow and she whispered, "I've always has an unhealthy crush on John Cusack." "Hmm, now where am I going to find an enormous boom box in this century? Will it get you to come back to my hotel with me if I hold my iPhone over my head and play that song?" He started fiddling theatrically with the music controls on his iPhone. "Mmm, it's so good to see you. Wait, oh God, are those patches on your elbows?" "You like them? I thought I'd go all out. You know, do the whole academic look." he said. "I like it very much. I, uh, think you're frying my brain." "That's the idea, gorgeous." It was as though an electric shock had started in his center and moved out to his fingertips and toes, up into his mouth - forcing him to tell her how deeply he cared for her. Yeah, you've come down with a case of acute dumbass. You fell for her and she doesn't want you.

I was gifted this book from the author for an honest review. I gave this book 5++ Stars.   This is book one in A Gateway to Love Novel. Althea (Tea) lost all that she had one tragic night when her husband was on his way home to her. She was only 24, but her life will never be the same without Jack in it. She lives her life as a widow and takes no chances at all. 5+ years later she is still in mourning and still has no sign of moving on with her life. What does she do? She listens to her friends and takes baby steps trying to get back into life and live.  This is where she meets Griffen. One night in a bar with her two friends. He sees her and has to know her. They talk, they decide two weeks of nothing but sex and enjoying each other. Two weeks were Althea can be free and not live her life of grief. What neither one of them expected was to fall the way that they did. To feel the way the do about each other.  With so much against them can they move forward into a future?  Some books you read and you move on and a few weeks later or months and you really don't remember a lot of the details about the book. So you go and you have to read the synopsis to try and remember what it was about. I do that a lot. I am a reviewer and I read up to 4-5 books a week. Sometimes a book a day. There are some books I read and I wonder why I wasted my precious time on it, and then you get the books that leave an imprint on your heart and you know that no matter what you read in the future that you will never forget that book ever. It is in you and all the details are staying right there in the forefront of your mind. Yeah this was one of those books. Three Rivers will be apart of me always. It was a heart wrenching book that had my heart hurting the whole time. There are twists and turns in this book and I see a lot of them coming when I read. I didn't see the first twist in the book coming even if it would have hit me in the face! The relationship that develops between Griffin and Althea is beautiful. It is real and it is raw. I loved that she did grieve for as long as she did. If it would have been any less I don't think that the book could have had the impact on me that it did.  Thank you Chole for your beautiful, amazing book! I really am looking forward to reading the second book in this series about Jenna. I do hope that we will be able to see more of Tea and Griffen in this book too> :)   I am honored to be apart of your tour! <3

Three Rivers is “Simply Spellbinding” from the prologue to the epilogue you will be hypnotized. I can’t even begin to express the author’s brilliance writing this book. Chloe Barlow writing is beautiful and addicting, she makes you fall in love with each of her characters throughout the story. Althea and Griffen captured my heart from the beginning. Althea story was heart breaking, but it made her stronger through her trials and tribulations dealing with her grief. Griffen is the perfect alpha male, with a sweet side to swoon over. The connection between Griffen and Althea was perfection, to love someone so unconditionally and completely is the true meaning of love and second chances. What started out as “Baby Steps” turned into hope, love and hot romance. Three Rivers is a book full of emotion, passion and angst that will leave you wanting more. Author Chloe Barlow your writing is flawless and truly amazing. The story of “Three Rivers” whispered to my heart and soul. You have a new fan, cannot wait for book two. . Five stars guaranteed, don’t hesitate just one click you will not be disappointed.

When I was given the chance to read this book a couple of months ago, I grabbed it, ran away and devoured it! "How do you start over when you gave everything to one life, one plan, and lost it all." When I finishd Three Rivers, I had to sit back and take it all in. This story of love, loss, happiness and rediscovery wrapped around my heart and didn't want to let go. When introduced to Althea, she has just suffered the tragic loss of her husband but left with the precious gift of a child. Helping her hold it together are her two best friends, Jenna and Aubrey. They continue to help and support her and encourage Althea to move on with her life. In her attempt to move on, we are introduced to Griffen. A famous author and native of Pittsburgh, who has returned to help his mentor at the local University. One night of passion opens up a new path for Althea that leads her across a river of happiness, love and heartbreak. I absolutely love how the author brought Althea and Griffen together. It wasn't just a boy meets girl book, it was so much more. While Althea put on a happy face around family and friends, inside she was still dealing with the pain and blame of what had happened to her husband. Griffen was trying to run away from his past and when they collided, Oh heck yes! They needed each other to help heal and find themselves again. But with all the happiness and healing, there is some pain and deceit. I found myself laughing quite a bit while reading the many one liners through the book from the secondary characters. Mainly Jenna and Aubrey who's books I cannot wait to read. For a first time author, Chloe T. Barlow has done an outstanding job of telling the story of Griffen and Althea. She takes us on such a ride that I didn't want it to end. Congratulations on such an amazing debut! I will be eagerly waiting for whats next. If you are looking for a book to read filled with love, passion, laughter, intrigue and twists you didn't see coming, this book is for you.

Once I got into this book it was hard to put down! I'm a Pittsburgh girl myself so it was nice to relate the book to my hometown! The use of the town as a major part of the book was genius!! Three River's, rapid, vast and ever changing, two flowing into one truly gave the readers a piece of Pittsburgh but also a heartfelt conclusion to Griffen and Althea love story! Never will I look at those rivers the same! Well written, full of love, romance, sadness, suspense, intriguing, and hope. Hope for a brighter tomorrow for both Althea and Griffen! If this next book in the series is anything like this one it will be a HUGE success!!

Three Rivers is the first book in a new series by Chloe T. Barlow. I picked it up after reading about it on a blog and I am so glad that I did.  Five years after losing her husband, Althea is trying to move on with her life. Althea’s friends Jenna and Aubrey convince her that she needs a night out on the town. The three of them go out and Althea meets Griffen. Althea’s first impression is “Holy hell, this guy is what sexier than is even fair.” And she couldn’t be more right. They spend one amazing, sex filled night together, but before morning comes, Althea sneaks out. Griffen tries his best to find her and has no luck. Just when he thinks that they will never see other again, fate intervenes and the two realize that they are connected in ways they couldn’t ever imagine.  There are so many reasons why I loved this book. The first being the actually story. It wasn’t your run of the mill girl meets boy, they fall in love and live happily ever after. The author throws in some plot twists that makes the story much more interesting. Althea and Griffen faced many obstacles throughout the book and had to work really hard to get their happy ending. The second thing I loved about the book was the friendship between Althea, Jenna and Aubrey. After her husband’s death, Althea needed help and Jenna and Aubrey were there to support here in any way they could. Anyone who has close girlfriends can relate to the three of them and how they support each other through the good times and the bad.  The book is a series so I look forward to learning more about Jenna’s friends as well as the mysterious Trey, Griffen’s go to information guy. He’s smart, has piercings and tattoos. I’m in!

I am a new reader of Chloe Barlow. I was thrilled when this was a book that would not let itself be put down. It demanded to stay in my hands intil the last pa ge was read. This book is about pain, guilt, overcoming adversity, mystery, danger and above all love. The main characters Griffen and Althea are complex and interesting. The storyline hooks you on the first page and doesn't release you until the last page.  I eagerly await the next book, City of Champions to b e released.

Congrats to Mrs. Barlow on a very fine book for her debut.  I loved all of the tours of Pittsburgh and the way the story was told. I would love to meet Althea and Griffin, just to see the love in their eyes.  The ending was a surprise and made it a mad chase to keep up.  It takes a lot of work to keep love and to keep it going.  They made it work.

Althea & Griffen...have had their share of hardships. Of love lost. Is it fate that brings them together? Does everything truly happen for a reason. Will Althea ever allow herself to truly live. Will Griffen ever change to his true form. An amazing cast of characters. A compelling story of life, with plot twists and turns you never see coming. Characters you hate, you grow to low. And characters you thought you knew, are not who they seem. Althea takes "baby steps" every chance she can, always retreating to what is easy. What hurts the least. Griffen thinks he is not good enough for Tea, but he wants to try to be. Their arrangement changes. Their feelings change. I stumbled upon this author, and I am so glad I did. Great read and cant wait for the next one!

Note: my review may contain some spoilers so keep that in mind. [Three Rivers was a delightful story of coping through grief and carrying on with life. Althea just lost her husband, the center of her universe. And shortly after: she finds out that she is pregnant with his child. Five years go by, and she’s still struggling to put together the pieces. This leads to "operation get Althea back into the dating pool and get laid!" headed Althea’s two besties and with the help of her mom!  She meets the mysterious Griffin in a bar and the two agree to make their relationship a no strings attached, purely good times and memories, SEX while he’s in town. However, that’s easier said than done after we find out that Griffin was in fact, Althea’s late husband’s estranged best friend from childhood, and trying to keep their arrangement under the nose of Althea’s mother in law!  Only…when feelings grow and an undeniable attraction and connection builds between them, what will they do? Will Althea give love a second chance despite the anguish and despair that she still carries? And will Griffin, a man running from his past, ever find foreclosure and love? Now add in two other male suitors who are interested in the fair Althea as well as some secrets, angst, and a heartbreaking revelation that could turn deadly and you’ve got yourself a story! A very lovely, steamy, and bittersweet romantic read! I hope for the next book or two to be on Aubrey or Jenna!

Love, sex, friendship and much more! This story touches on some really personal stuff for me. I know grief, as I am sure mostly everyone does. Not only is this a story about romance and some very steamy ………..did I say STEAMY!! Sex scenes; but it also touches on grief; what it does to not only you but everyone around you. It is also about friendship and finding love again. The story line is great, the characters are easy to relate to they are “real’ people. That is how it felt for me. The pace is perfect. It isn’t so farfetched that you’re like “yeah right”. It most definitely felt like a real life situation. I really like Griffen and Althea together the way they work together they just seem to fit. Everyone deserves to have loved, to be loved and to love again. If my brother were here he wouldn’t want my sister in law to be alone, to never love again. He wasn’t a selfish man. Not a selfish bone in his body. I can relate so much to Carol. This is coming from someone who lost a brother and sister, my mother has been thru the ringer. I know some day that my sister in law will find love, she deserves to. Anyway, I think you should read this book you will definitely take away more than some hot sex scenes.

Three Rivers (Gateway to Love, #1) by Chloe T Barlow 4 out of 5 Stars Althea is a woman controlled by grief, fear, loss, and denial until she is convinced to take a baby step towards a healthy life by her two best friends Aubrey and Jenna. The loss of her husband almost 6 years prior has kept her from feeling anything but broken and incomplete. But one night with Griffen awoke a vitality she didn't know still existed, especially when one night wasn't all fate had planned for them. Overall I loved Griffen's character! He developed and grew before your eyes and had such a well-rounded solid role that it was hard to forget he wasn't real. I also truly felt involved in the relationship with the three girlfriends, Althea, Jenna, and Aubrey, but enjoyed the character and personality development of Jenna and Aubrey the most. Where this book didn’t work so well with me was I had a truly hard time relating to Althea throughout most of the book. It seemed as though she was hiding behind grief and other people's opinions more out of weakness than sadness or fear. She was totally relatable and a grieving widow, although still a little over done, with her friends and with Griffin but with anyone else she seemed just insecure, weak, slightly unstable, and a total pushover. However, she’s supposed to be a high profile lawyer, it just didn't work for me personally. I also felt something odd shifted in the verb tense and POV at certain times in the book but I couldn't quite put my finger on it enough to say, “aahh that’s it!.” I would just be reading along and it would feel as if something had shifted and it seemed off. This is a good book and I do intend to read the next book in the series which is Jenna's story, so take my review as my opinion and realize I did enjoy the entire story and it’s a great storyline with great twists and turns that were super unexpected! **Complimentary copy given in exchange for an honest review** Pepper, My Secret Book Spot
