These early 1950s Leonard western stories show the promise of his later work great characters (good and bad), intriguing situations and a compelling setting. Leonard can't quite fill his own boots, as it were, showing promise as a young writer but some of the stories still turn out a bit predictable or flat. Leonard seems best when he has a full-length novel to flesh out his characters, and much of his effort seems rushed here. Still, these seven stories are worth a look for Leonard fans or for those who just want to read the title story before they see the movie.

3:10 to Yuma--I was not much into westerns at all--but this movie made me search out the writer and with it I found Justified and Elmore Leonard and Longmire. Maybe it is time to bring westerns back
