Set in Wales. MJP uses Penguins, slate mines, billiard tables and the Welsh countryside to write a compelling novel of a demon earl (half-gypsy) and a not-so exotic heroine, appropriately named Clare. Clare is Welsh, and the daughter of a Methodist minister. She finds herself in a compromising position (several, actually, and few on the billiards table) in an effort to make working conditions better for coal miners.

This story has depth that I haven't seen recently in the romances I've been reading. But not so much that the story doesn't move along. The characters were so very likeable! I loved the heroine and just wanted to hug Nicholas, the half gypsy earl. It was a wonderful story full of details about the average man's life in the mine and the industry of Wales in that time period. I admired and enjoyed the way the author brought the gypsy way of life into Nicholas' story.

Ever since I found Mary Jo Putneys' books, I've had a great time. All of her heriones and heros are somebody I want to be. What fun it is reading her books. Also she does great geographical research. I'm in love.
