The green mist collected into a great snake, its coils spiraling over Rachel. It opened it's fanged mouth, releasing a series of hisses.
Alarmed and amazed, Hugh found himself understanding the mystical snake.
"Snow and Fire will meet;
The demigods of the Hunt
To answer the Call of the Wise-Ones
Captured in their halls of Stone
Without the help of the Olive-Wreathed
To He<_>l, the World's spirits are gone."
The snake fell silent, remaining coiled around the Oracle's frozen form.
Hugh finally shook off his stupor, staggering across the icy room to where Chiron's horn lay. He grabbed it and returned to the doorway of the Big House, blowin a long, mournful note through the hollowed tool.
Instantly, the camp came alive, campers streaming from their cabins. Many were only in PJs, others with assorted bits of armour and the occasional orange t-shirt.
Hugh waited on the porch, his hazelish eyes desolate.
The other senior counselors were the first to arrive. He greeted each with a solemn nod.
"What's going on?"
"Where's Chiron?"
"Why'd you blow the horn?"
The noise was almost overwhelming.
Hugh raised his hands, trying to speak over the crowd.
Finally, they settled.
He sighed. "We have a problem. Chiron and Rachel. . . Well. . ." He waved his hand towards the doorway.
The campers surged forward, attempting to catch a glimpse of the interior. Gasps and whispers ran through the crowd.
Hugh leaned against the railing, turning the prophecy over in his mind. He flinched as a hand rested gently on his arm.
"Hugh?"
He looked up to see Tesa, the head of the Hecate cabin.
"You alright?" She asked, brushing her black hair back.
He looked hesitant, "Yeah. You think you could get them quiet again?"
She nodded, turning, and spreading her hands. A flash eminated from them, momentarily blinding Hugh.
When the spots cleared from his eyes, he saw the campers had quieted, watched him.
He looked at them, clearing his throat.
"There was a prophecy."
"From Rachel?" One camper piped up, seeming confused.
"From--the snake. . ."
The crowd muttered.
"What snake?"
"You mean you can't--?" Hugh's voice died. /Great,/ he thought, /I'm the only one who can see the snake. . ./
"Nevermind. There was a prophecy, though." He amended hastily, "'Snow and Fire will meet; The demigods of the Hunt To answer the Call of the Wise-Ones Captured in their halls of Stone. Without the help of the Olive-Wreathed, To H<_>el, the World's spirit are gone.'"
The air grew eerily silent. Foreboding crept through the others like a thick fog.
"We need a quest!" Someone said suddenly.
Hugh nodded half-heartedly. "Alright. Who's with me?"
"I am." Hugh was relieved to see Tesa stepping forward to stand by his side.
"And me!" A camper cried.
He looked up to see a lithe form pushing it's way through the clump of people.
A grin split his face when he saw Phaux's dark red hair tumble from the others.
She straightened her disheveled clothes and marched forward.
Hugh spoke grimly. "Okay guys. Who's ready to go save the world?"
[ Sorry if this chapter seemed a little rushd. ^-^ ~ NRM ]
