In order to combat their daughter's depression, Alexa's parents create Calexa, a controversial pill that ages the user a year for every self-inflicted wound. The pill is widely praised, sending Alexa and her family into newfound wealth and fame. Alexa further descends into her mental illness as she copes with her parent's notoriety and sudden abandonment, along with the troubles that come with rapid aging. In therapy Alexa meets a free-spirited boy named Kyle, and the two begin to slowly build an unlikely friendship that neither of them knew they needed.
