Tiger Project: Schwere Panzer (Tiger) Abteilung 503 by Dale Richard Ritter

"This book is the first in a proposed series that will delve into the inner workings of Germanys most fearsome panzers of the Second World War, the Tiger and Tiger II. There are many current books that deal with various aspects of the Tiger series of tanks, but few include more than minimal biographical information of the men who crewed these battlefield behemoths. Based mainly on interviews, personal diaries, and recollections, the series will present the German Tiger and King Tiger crewmen as soldiers who had the opportunity to serve as a member of a crew and units that fielded a truly extraordinary and deadly weapon. The series will include all levels of soldiers from the Tigerabteilung commanders, down to the drivers, loaders, gunners, and radiooperators. This first book is devoted solely to Alfred Rubbel, who served with the Panzertruppe on the Russian front from the opening of Operation Barbarossa through to the end of the war. When the new Tigerabteilungs were raised, Rubbel was assigned to one as a newly commissioned officer. Throughout his years in the panzers he experienced both the elation of the opening successes of Barbarossa and the demoralizing withdrawal back over the borders of the Third Reich. Combining his military experiences with over 200 photographs, the majority of which are previously unpublished, creates a very readable account from an everyday soldier who also happened to have the privilege of serving in one of the most successful tanks ever produced."

Contrary to everything that I learned growing up in the post-WWII days - the German soldier was no different than our soldiers throughout history including our modern day army. I've read both books now in 'The Tiger Project' series and the human side of both of the German tank soldiers highlighted is very eye-opening. I'm happy to be able to read and understand the perspective from our former enemy -- and most importantly to realize that the one-time enemy soldiers were no different than the rest of us. 'The Tiger Project: Rubbel' & 'The Tiger Project: Kronke' are excellent reads - great insights into the typical German soldier's mind and , there are great pictures to illustrate the story !! I highly recommend both of the books in the series thus far.

Wow -- as a fan of WWII history, especially primary source/first-person accounts - I have to say that the new series 'The Tiger Project' is very intriguing. There are few memoirs available from German Panzer officers below the rank of General. Alfred Rubbel's story is an honest account from the perspective of a soldier who rose through the ranks to become an officer and commander of a Tiger tank. Rubbel's honesty in telling of his experiences is excellent and the accompanying photographs add tremendously to the story. Not often have I read as interesting and honest an account as this one. I truly look forward to the next book in this series - on Horst Krönke - another junior officer in the panzer units - and hopefully more will follow. This book is definitely worth the price!!
